I found this video especially interesting because I work for a company that has been using a compute module in an industrial product for a while. Recently we've been experimenting with other SoM's to use in the product because of price and availability.

My new fav youtuber :) I've been on the fence about using RPi because of the cost and components I don't need (eth, extra usbs...), but I'm almost certain that I need the computing power for computer vision. I also need to be able to connect cameras and a night vision light source. I'm still learning so thanks for the vid!

That's so great to hear, thank you! Yeah if you need advanced computer vision then you definitely need the power of a microprocessor like the RPi. But you can probably find something similar but with less extra, unnecessary features. If you have the space, and the profit margins then Id go with whatever is easiest for you to implement.

I was considering starting a project with picos powering it, wish you went more in depth on how you see them. I like the fact that they are small and cheap and the w even has wifi and potentially bluetooth, micropython is very appealing also, you can ship products that anyone can tweak since there's so many people programming python these days.

I love the Pico and they are a great solution that can easily be migrated to a custom design for high volume production! Very powerful MCU for only $1.

If you really need the performance of a microprocessor then I'd look at the RPi Compute Module or the Banana Pi Compute Module.

It depends on the products, and many product designs don't require a great knowledge of analog design.

But isn't the main reason for not using an RPi in a consumer product is that you (the user) can't pull the plug without possibly corrupting the SD card? That seems like a dealbreaker to me.

RPis at hardware are pretty shit. However the OS software support has kept RPis alive. There are so many great hardware alternatives available in the market but with least or no software support. RPI continues to be a winner for more time to come in educational and commercial both.

I dunno. To me it seems a tad…. I can’t think of a good word. Amateur? Grab an allwinner chip, look at board schematics, use only what you need from them and Bob’s your uncle

That opens lots of complexity. Rarely do I think a custom MPU board design is feasible nor necessary at the beginning. Better to use a MPU module on your custom board. I always support the simplest solution. Thanks for your comment!
