❤I am older than you and it disturbs me when people take so disparaging about public housing. My mother worked but we lived in public housing. Because she worked, our rent was 25% of her income and we weren't eligible for any other government assistance. Almost all of our neighbors were also members of the working poor, who were law clerks (my mom), postal workers, teachers, bus drivers and nurses etc. Although there were a few trifling residents who didn't take care of their homes, most residents in my project took pride in their homes, even those who did receive government assistance. More importantly, most of the kids that I grew up with left public housing and went on to have professional careers including many whom went on to college, tradeschool and nursing. In my family, I became an IT analyst, my middle brother is an auto mechanic and my youngest brother is an accountant. We all own homes and my mother lives in a $1700 a month apartment. I agree with your mantra about people getting a job. Many of the govt programs are going away or the guidelines will be getting stricter, especially if certain people are elected to office. In the last 2 years, the minimum wages of most starting jobs for people with no college or experience has risen from $8 to $10 an hour to $15 to $18 an hour. You can take a six week paid class and be a nurses aid. What is wrong with taking a starting fast food job, working your way up to manager and eventually owning a fast food restaurant. Similarly, a nurses aid can work their way up to become an LPN and eventually an RN. Similarly, taking a couple of computer courses will give someone the skills needs to be a computer analyst. All it takes in initiative to move up in life, not handouts.
