My rat is blind and the vet told me to have a large ground cage so he won't fall He is blind because he was ment to be a feeder rat and he lives with his brother who is missing half his tail
@peachypetparadise276 жыл бұрын
Kelly Stoppard Well in this case that is understandable, rats who aren't able to climb can be housed in more ground spaced cages. Although rats in general have poor eye sight especailly pink, ruby and red eyed rats. And aw poor rat :(

PEACHY PETPARADISE Can I put a hamster in a rat cage safely?
@peachypetparadise276 жыл бұрын
You can but it would be better if they were in a hamster cage. It's best if it's not hugely tall, the Mary rat cage which I featured in this video would be great for a hamster :) If you were to however house them in a tall cage then I definitely suggest hanging lots of toys from the roof and from levels (if they come with the cage) so if a hamster were to fall, they would land immediately and it would save them from a nasty fall which could cause them to injure or even break their backs. Hamsters are a lot more fragile than rats which is something important to keep in mind :)

Can I use a tank for rats while I’m cleaning the main cage? (The main cage is made of wire and really big don’t worry)
@SparklyRainbowWolves4 жыл бұрын
I was given a nice rat cage that is basically a taller version of the low cage you were describing. the issue i faced was the bars were way to spaced out for my baby rat. we noticed this as soon as we put her in and learned cooking racks against it until I went to the store to attach hardware cloth. The baby rat ended up escaping and has been hiding in my parents room for three days.

I'm getting rats in a few months !! I have one question.... at a local pet shop there were a few dumbo rats (being kept in a really, really small TANK) and the three that were left were all completely white, no marks, no red eyes ( so they weren't albino) is this normal? Should I buy these rats or are they bred weirdly or something? It's probably nothing but I don't want to buy a weirdly bred rat or anything...
@peachypetparadise276 жыл бұрын
Yes this is normal, it's just the pigmentation in the eyes is different to the pink, ruby etc. The eye colour should not effect their health so yes that wouldn't play a part in health problems. I would however consider that when buying from any pet shop, there is always a risk where they can get health problems later in life, that is something you have to be prepared for when buying from a pet shop because you don't know what their parents are like, their genetics or background so you don't know for sure how they will end up or what health problems could arise. And unexpected deaths can happen when buying from pet shops but you can get those who are perfectly fine and live to their life expectancy so as I said it really depends on each rat and their background and genetics, not down to eye colour. That's just something to keep in mind :)
@cornmale6 жыл бұрын

Why do you only have one? You should ask for a bigger cage yes but don't just pick a tall one because ground space is just as important as height space so I would make sure it meets both of these requirements

another material you can use for lining wire flooring is cardboard! its sturdy and will soak up pee pretty well, you can use paperclips to fasten it securely to shelves.
@peachypetparadise276 жыл бұрын
Yes you could although it wouldn't last as long as it's quite a weak material so you would have to keep getting more of it. Also if the rats get hold of it they may chew it up straight away haha. But it could definitely work as a temporary solution :)

I have a wooden rat cage (inside is laminated) one side is completely wire mesh and it has plenty of space for climbing inside. I have an air purifier that sits right outside it and is on almost 24/7 (HEPA style purifier) My rats are both coming on 2 years old and don't show any signs of problems. @_dancedance6 жыл бұрын
AJ Olesen it would be a good cage if you put extra mesh on the outside, as the gaps between the bars are a little bit big, and your hamster would be able to get through it an escape. I️ learned this the hard way, as I️ bought a guinea pig cage for my hamster and he escaped.
@peachypetparadise276 жыл бұрын
It's definitely big enough, it just needs meshing as the bar spacing is too big for hamsters. If you buy some 1cm wire mesh, that should do the job :)

Rats are Fossorial, meaning they dwell on the ground and love to dig and scavenge. They need more ground coverage than climbing. Sure rats love to climb but the longer and wider a base of a cage is the better than height. Sincerely an educated Rat Breeder
@shyem53084 жыл бұрын
Duna boxes are best for baby rats, most of the breeders use them. U cannot house baby rats with their mum in high wired cage. They are also great for introductions, ill rats, etc.
@linneasjolander93072 жыл бұрын
Most of these things are right however I am very sad to see You didn’t mention pan depth or floor space as those are extremly inportant as rats need alot more floor space then hight and substrate should be as deep as possible so they can dig and make tunnels like they do in the wild.

What do you think of the 'DIY Ikea Rat cage'?
@peachypetparadise276 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I've seen some quite a few and they look quite small and cramped. People seem to use bookcases with shallow shelves so barely enough room for rats to climb. They also only put ventilation on the front which is definitely not enough and I don't think a cage like that is suitable. If you were however to use a much bigger and wider bookcase to start with, mesh all the walls, make the shelves much higher so there's lots of climbing space, then it should be suitable. :)

It’s unfortunate your sister is going to be responsible for them when she doesn’t know the care. But it’s great that you’re doing research as you can always help take care of them. Depending on how young she is, she may find it hard because rats require a lot more time than hamsters so she will need as much help as she can get. Either way, they will be in your house and in your family so rats are becoming apart of your life anyway :) If you have any questions about owning rats, I’d be happy to help

If you're looking for a cage that's not too expensive then I suggest either the Freddy 2 or 3 rat cage, the Rat Mamble 100, Imac 100 Double. It's best to keep in mind that the cage is the most expensive supply of all and it's important that you pick a suitable one. Also rats are very different to hamsters and require a lot more time and care. Just thought that needed saying incase you weren't aware :)
@Toasted_Ink6 жыл бұрын
Ah awesome, thank you for letting me know! I really appreciate that, I'll be sure to take a look at those. Yeah, I've been doing as much research as possible on these little guys to try and give the best time they can while they're here! I recently Purchased a rat and I have a three story hamster cage that is connected to another smaller cage I was wondering if rats like tubing like hamsters do cause they seem to not move from cage to cage like my Hamsters did
@peachypetparadise275 жыл бұрын
Okay firstly, rats should be in pairs or groups because they are pack animals that are dependent on the companionship of their own kind. Without it they can become lonely and stressed, you aren't going to be with it every minute of it's life and for the time you are out, that rat remains alone so please get your rat a friend. See if you can go back to the store and buy another rat from that same tank if there are any more. Secondly, rats should not be housed in hamster cages. They are not designed for rats in any way so please upgrade to a rat cage. Also your rat won't be able to fit in a hamster tube. Tubes aren't necessary for rats like they are with hamsters. Rats and hamsters are very different and I suggest doing plenty of research on them
@skaterboy-dq9ls5 жыл бұрын

Plenty of room for all of them to have their own space/climb and hide away in all of the toys and hammocks you can add!!! @alexakathleen30814 жыл бұрын
Aly Dolla Sign tanks are horrible, please get a different cage! Trust me, you won’t regret having a wire cage! Wire cages are much better because the overall price will be less because you will most likely have to take the rat to the vet because of respiratory issues. The topper might help but a wire cage is still better. I have a male mouse and keep him in a 20 gallon tank, mice are fine for mice just not rats.

Sara Posiewka get another cage. They are not safe to keep with eachother and need very different requirements.

Definitely not. They are complete different rodents and would not bond. Also on a dangerous note, the rat would most likely harm or even kill the hamster. If you're going to get rats, make sure to always get two or more, never one. Also do plenty of research beforehand, rats are very different to owning a hamster :)
