He never regretted not being able to marry the American he loved in his youth. He mentioned it’s good he never married any of the 4 women he almost married at different stages in life, based on who they were. I think he realised they would have got in his way & he would not have been able to fulfil as much as he had in life if he had married any of the 4 women. The American did not even want to move to India with him, so she was definitely not able to embrace India like he did, the war was not an excuse, she could have promised to move to India once the war was over, if it had been true love.
