It’s a shame to see the new pastor go I really liked him and I liked how he got people interested in religion for the first time. Personally I’m an atheist but I don’t think that the new-found faith Springfield gained was a bad thing. But I knew that things would have to go back to how it was. I think that’s the danger of having to have every episode end with everything going back to how it started because it means that the status quo can never really change. And when the status quo doesn’t change, the characters can’t change. It doesn’t feel like they’ve learned anything. Or maybe I’m just reading too much into this show 😅
@marwanzogheib1224
@marwanzogheib1224 3 жыл бұрын
You aren't. I like your reasoning and the way you connected the dots. The thing is with these kinds of cartoons is that you need to go back to the status quo so you can watch any episode and still understand what's going on (in a certain way like Friends and Brooklyn 99). On another note, the idea of always going back to the status quo can be a critic of the society we live in: people are always afraid of what's different. The people of Springfield always welcome something new when it answers something but go back to their old ways when adversity arises. No lessons learned. A perfect way to criticise how we as humans do not learn from History for example.
@kktt725
@kktt725 3 жыл бұрын
@@marwanzogheib1224 That's a really good point about the Springfield people embracing new things but then going back to their old ways! I never thought about that before - it blows my mind and makes me sad at the same time because of how true it is haha and yeah I guess that's the curse of the episodic show. Though I'd argue that you can see the progression of character arcs through Brooklyn 99 and Friends a bit more, possibly because they're played by real actors and their characters grow and age with time. But yeah really good point. Thanks for making me think of something I've never thought about before!

Honestly, this episode translates pretty well into the real world as well. I am a atheist myself but I also like to pay attention to religions, and used to be a christan myself due to family, but one thing I noticed was that people excessively used written text from the bible (or in worse scenarios, from the waters of babylon, which is a scripture that was not even made by someone strong in religion) to justify their actions, beliefs, and so on, rather than seeing any bigger picture to the existence of their god.

Well, it was still anti-Christian propaganda. I don’t recall the Jewish writers ever going at Judaism in the same way they treat Christianity, despite the fact that Judaism is more exclusive that Christianity by many, many degrees. Judaism promotes the idea that the Jews are ‘gods chosen people’, whereas Christianity is universalist. Perhaps the writers are so willing to deride Christianity precisely because of how meek Christians really are.

People like Ned Flanders are undamentalist. They take the religious teachings so literally, and exclude anything that conflicts with the teachings that appeal to their pre-conceived notions about what it means to be “christian”, or holy, or faithful (whatever the nomenclature). I have always assumed that god wants us to have open hearts as well as open minds. But who knows, maybe Im wrong.
@Conkarushikid10
@Conkarushikid10 3 жыл бұрын
You are not wrong at all. People like Ned just don't see the people don't need to worship god 24/7 to be christian. Like Ken Stabler the football player when he talked about god "Isn't it just about being constantly aware. Ain't it just about knowing that you can't ever get away from god. He's always there, He's always in the middle of everything you do, you're in the middle of everything he does, Ain't it just about just about being aware." As long as we acknowledge god is there with us and we're with him is what being Christian is to me.

@@Conkarushikid10 I shake your hand!!! Well spoken. It reminds me of a time my head was blow when I was told that a “church” is not a mere building (no matter how gaudy or ostentatious), but instead a group of people having a meaningful and positive discussion on how to, as you said, acknowledge God and just simply be good to one another.

@RobertMintun you are knot wrong My father is almost the same as Flanders, this ideal that all you need is to read the bible, go to church and pray, plus believe and all those who choose not to will go to hell, But I believe it's also about loving compassion, kindness forgiveness Be good to yourself, be good to your love one's and most importantly be good to God, don't abuse the gifts God had given you.

The fact of the matter is it's all about just being a good person, religious leaders who try to convince you to be good otherwise you're sent to eternal damnation arent good leaders, you should just be good because it makes YOU happy, not your god. I imagine trying to weasel your way into heaven by being good to try to please god is gonna be frowned upon by the big man in the sky, the bible isnt what matters and neither is who preaches it, it's all about just being kind and going out of your way to help others because it makes them and you happier.

It boils down to re-purposing church to suit the current societal biases. If Christianity doesn’t serve our designs, change it until it does. The only good thing is that their message attract the masses, including those that avoid church. It may be a good first step for some.
