This is one that's been on my list to get around to for a long time. I finally got around to watching it and I have to say I was blown away by this. The moments of beauty juxtaposed to the bleak environment were masterfully done. This film really left me feeling a lot. Great review and I would love to see a video where you discuss the ending of this film.

I've had the DVD for years, but I haven't watched it for a long time. Your piece has made me want to watch it again, while reminding me of the dread I feel towards it. No-one's ever made a happy film about the Glaswegian working class, have they? Apart from That Sinking Feeling?

I have only seen this film in snippets when we covered this in Film Studies for Scottish cinema, and from what I remember, it's still stuck with me. I'm wanting to revisit it with more mature eyes, not really sure why it's only on the US Criterion release - guess I'll have import it!

Is this a UK Criterion release or an import? I saw this on tv some years ago, now, thought it wonderful, but it seems to have faded from my memory so I need to see it again. If it’s a U.K. release I’ll seek it out. I’ll look forward to you doing a longer discussion of this, whatever. Ramsey and Andrea Arnold are two British directors that we just don’t hear enough about. Is it because they’re women? Messrs Russell, Loach and Roeg always got lots of publicity back in the day, but not these two. Such a pity. Thanks for this.

It's a Region A Criterion release that I sent to Graham. Morvern Callar, also by Ramsay got a snazzy Region A release via Fun City Editions. That is now out of print. It went out of print in a year! I suspect that with FCE moving away from Vinegar Syndrome/OCN and partnering with MVD Rewind and Radiance in the UK, you can expect a Morvern Callar region B Radiance/FCE edition of Morvern Callar. I hope that is the case with Morvern Callar, because it is yet again completely gone.
