I was actually tapping on the boost button instead of holding it; I also mixed it up between the low road and the high road, switching between the two whenever I needed extra fuel. I also only pushed up slightly and then let Ratchet glide down with the momentum of the Skyboard, then pushed back up and repeated the process. The racing segments here weren't that difficult as a result, IMO. Especially if you maintain a good racing line throughout.
