I think an ideal Nickelodeon film review type of show, would be to have an actual, professional critic to serve as kind of a traffic cop, guiding force, and moderator. I'm thinking of Linda Ellerbee on the "Nick News" show in that she was an adult figure, who the young audience can respect and wouldn't talk down to them.
@TackyRackyComixNEO4 жыл бұрын
Y'know, it's kinda funny, the original incarnation of Rated K almost seems like a precursor to the modern movie podcasts of today, especially in how much the unscripted, disorganized thoughts of laymen is part of the appeal in these shows. Granted, an uninformed adult doing a podcast about movies is likely still gonna be a lot easier to listen to than an uninformed child doing the same, but it's interesting to think about how Nickelodeon was essentially doing what everyone with a Blue Yeti mic is doing these days nearly 20 years before the trend really caught on in the mainstream.

The kids giving uninformed hot takes that only kids would understand I kind of think is the point, your friends in the lunch room hadn't seen all the movies. The cringe and stuttering is more on the producers and directors not giving the kids enough time to prepare and not doing enough takes. You've got to remember they didn't have youtube, where you can literally watch just this show again. The concept of the show, uninformed kids explaining culture to other kids why they should or shouldn't watch a movie is a precursor to the internet.
@TMC1982Part2 Жыл бұрын
I remember when Todd in the Shadows did his "One Hit Wonderland" video on "Everybody Was Kung Fu Fighting" by Carl Douglas. At one point in the video, Todd describes the song as essentially being about Carl Douglas just coming out of watching a kung-fu movie and in almost a stream of consciousness, telling his friends about all of the cool parts. That's what "Rated K" feels like in a nutshell. If you're want a movie review show that's genuinely informative, enlighteningly, and analytical then this isn't the show for you. Like you said, it's just a show about ignorant, uninformed kids giving out a bunch of hot takes but nothing truly in-depth.

Rated K in its initial format, has the same problem as Don't Just Sit There later had, albeit in talk show form. They both had a "for kids, by kids" approach, which is fine and good in theory for a channel like Nickelodeon. But the hosts are way too raw, unsophisticated, and unpolished and as result, it doesn't make for "good" television (at least unironically). Maybe, I'm someone, who when reading or watching a film review, I don't want the critics to speak at what's perceived to be my level. I want the critic to enlighten me. I don't mean, be condescending or talk down to me, but give the impression that they have a wealth of knowledge and understanding of film history and the art of filmmaking.

Oh to remember a time when Disney acknowledged Song of the South's existence. Anyway, I can see what they were going with, but getting average kids to do the show was a mistake. They should have kids that have at least some passion for film and the process, it's obvious from the clips you showed the had no idea what they were talking about and sometimes focused on superficial things. I wonder towards the end of Roger Ebert's life when he was battling cancer, he thought that's it's not as painful as that time I was on Rated K.

A hit and miss perspective. I actually felt that the stuttering improvisations were a bit more genuine and cooler to watch than other shows, even though Siskel and Ebert did pwned them in that episode. You did hit correctly that the “2.0” format was exactly like “Entertainment Tonight” and I detested it for its fake, slick production. However, you failed to mention the few months in-between “The Big Ballot” and the new format, which REALLY stunk. As they were bringing in new reviewers and weeding out really cool people like Lakmini and Matt, they were cutting the movie reviews and creating skits for the critics since they didn’t have many movies to review. Thus, we got garbage from one critic who throughout the entire episode kept asking, “Now that I’m a big star, should I change my name to one name, Jen, like Madonna, or should I keep it at two names?”, and would ask the other critics for advice. THAT was pointless, and I missed the movie reviews right then and there.

For a show I genuinely loved as a 6-7 year old, I was expecting a healthy dose of cringe......and it was more than I was expecting. I will say though as an actual child, I didn’t catch how bad they all were at this I will say this may have helped support my love of needing to quantify and rate pop culture (it helped when there was a thing called the internet later and one didn’t need a tv show). I’m also a little nostalgic for when something like this was produced for a Viacom network and not public access. (GREAT WORK WITH THIS AS PER ALWAYS) I KNEW the kids choice awards was a rated K thing initially
@TackyRackyComixNEO4 жыл бұрын
You could say that the show did its job perfectly in this respect, considering they were making it pretty much solely to appeal to kids and not really to anyone outside that demographic. The fact that we as adults can look at it and only feel secondhand embarrassment really goes a long way in showing how super focused this show is there. Chances are had I seen this as a kid I would've loved it then too for the concept alone. This is pretty much how kids talk about movies, so I guess I see that kind of authenticity as a success in a way, even if it isn't totally compelling of a watch if you're older than like 14 years old.

I hate the idea of just taking "Real" kids and expecting them to be able to talk about a subject. Sure, get a swath of kids from different backgrounds so that they can relate different worldviews when talking about movies or shows, but make sure they know what they are talking about. Give them classes on story structure, editing... they are working for a TV show, it all would clearly be relevant to their interests and make them better able to do their jobs in the moment. Heck, you could even have little segments at the end of the show where a real film critic comes out and talks about things like sound mixing, or the 180 rule. You know, the show's audience can develop as film viewers.

They really did need to get kids with film knowledge, that would've made things less awkward and over reliant on surface level stuff like how Ringwald looks
