In this rather superb London walking tour Joolz visits St John's Wood, a most serene and well-to-do neighbourhood in north London.
If you are attending the American School in London this is the area you will be frequenting!
Familiar to Beatles fans because of the Abbey Road Studios and famous zebra crossing. We also visit Lords cricket ground, Paul McCartney's house and many other interesting historical places.
See Boy George's first house, learn why it is called St John's Wood, and find out all about Joanna Southcott, one of the women of the apocalypse!
As usual there's the usual banter and humour mixed with interactions with the public....and Bananaman!
With music from Dave Chandler's quintet.

My grandmother was a lollipop lady on the Abbey Road zebra crossing just a few years before The Beatles made it famous. She had told me for years about her job as a lollipop lady in the 60's next to a recording studio in London and daily seeing many famous singers of that time on their way in to record albums. It wasn't until the early 90s when she was retelling the story I realised she was talking about Abbey Road crossing. And yes, she confirmed it was indeed Abbey Road crossing she worked on. She literally had no idea how famous the crossing had become and knew nothing about it featuring on the front cover of The Beatles album. I only wish I had a photo of her standing on that crossing, but sadly I don't. It's always worth listening carefully when grandparents tell you about the things they did before you were born!😂

Yay, a new Joolz Guide - I've watched all the rest of them at least two or three times already so it's great to have another (the Christmas song I've watched at least 20 times!) - Joolz and Simon are a hilarious double act, and Joolz could easily have a career singing as well - anyway, just spent 10 minutes trying to work out how to spell "mackerel" without the letter "a" - until I realised that "station" is not included in this game

This edition is really outstanding. As one whose place of birth was, according to my passport, the City of London, I learn so much about London from Joolz. Many years ago, I was intrigued by Joanna Southcott's Box of Sealed Writings. I learnt that The Panacea Society had placed a large advertisement in Piccadilly Circus in 1932 which proclaimed that "Crime and Banditry, Distress and Perplexity will increase in England until the Bishops open Joanna Southcott's Box"'. It required 24 Bishops to do so. It often had smaller advertisements with similar wording in newspapers in later years, which is where I became aware of it. The Panacea Society is now the Panacea Charitable Trust; it is located in Bedford and as far as I am aware, 24 Bishops have not as yet descended on that fine town. The Trust contributes to a number of social-related causes in and around Bedford. So many thanks Joolz for finding where in London Joanna Southcott is buried. Also for the excellent editing of your films, done I believe only by you. Tremendous achievement.

St. John's Wood will be familiar to a lot of American expats as it is home to the American School in London, with over 1400 students, since 1971 at this location. The education minister who spoke at the 1971 opening was Margaret Thatcher. Elton John performed in the high school gym in 1974.

Excellent content as usual Joolz but sad not to see a mention of the former Portland Arms pub now masquerading as a French Cafe called Soutine. I was resident there in the early 1970's when it was used to accomodate both England and visiting cricket team whilst playing Test Matches down the road at Lords. Later when new fire regulations prohibited the pubs use as a hotel for paying guests it became accommodation for senior management of Bass Charringtons Brewery whilst working in London. Regular visitors to the pub included Dennis Waterman who played darts there on Saturday lunchtime (Ham sandwiches and a pint of Light & Bitter), Joe Gormley from the NUM whilst doing battle with the Government, many well known actors and occasional visitors from Abbey Road studios. Has since been a wine bar, a Carluccios amongst others.

Some things you didn't mention: Billy Fury also lived on Cavendish Avenue, his house was more or less across the road from the McCartney residence. I also think that the actor Harry H Corbett had a house on the corner of Cavendish Avenue and Circus Rd (in case your wondering who he is, he was Harold in Steptoe and Son). There's a pub called the Clifton Pub that I heard that the Beatles sometimes drank in but this would need to be verified. Keith Richards lived on Carlton Hill. You could have also mentioned that St Johns Wood has one of the largest private hospitals in London (The Wellington Hospital) and the American School.

He took him to a magic cloud where Mother Nature gave him special powers... That bear became SUPERTED!"

I worked in a house in Cavendish Avenue. Some con merchant sold them Farrow and Ball paint, the biggest con in decorating. Over £100 per tin and it can't be touched up without showing as an obvious patch, so one tiny mark and the whole wall has to be repainted. That's going to go down well when their new baby starts growing up and dragging her toys around and generally doing what toddlers and children do. Good job they're as rich as Rishi.

@@JohnyG29 Why NZ went sour on the UK? It started when the UK pivoted unilaterally to the EU. The UK was NZs biggest trading partner (after Australia) and they were forced to diversify to Japan, South America, the US. NZ has no issue with the EU in general, but the UK nullified our trade agreements, and didn’t especially support new agreements with the EU. Plus your rugby fans are absolute bellends. People in NZ of British heritage feel less British than the Scots, but also less angry about it.
@foreignparticle1320

@@JohnyG29 and following on from Nic's comments, the optics of colonial legacy have been getting a pretty hard boot up the rear in all national institutions (for better or for worse) recently. NZ is far more introverted these days, especially since Covid, and the relevance of our remaining meagre ties to Britain is fading ever faster. If the UK had maintained a faithful economic relationship to NZ (and indeed to the Commonwealth), we likely would have maintained a greater degree of socio-cultural cohesion with the UK.
