Fun fact: Dixon's original plan for this book was humans time travelling into the future and ending up in the world of After Man, and the book would've explored human impact on the descendants of different future species. However executive meddling kicked in and completely altered the book into its current state. Dixon himself disliked the final product and would later rewrite his original idea in a new book that I don't remember the title of. This book was also only available in Japan, because as it turns out his works are super popular over there.

The trick is that they don't "fix" the genetics, they cure the illnesses (or really just treat the symptoms). Every aspect of them is born broken and withered and messed up half a dozen ways, but their medical tech is so good that they've always been able to deal with it. Its just progressed so far that the line between treatment and body has blurred. (As far as I am aware)
