I remember being in Dartmoor (2002 or something) and the ration packs were great. Cardboard boxes back then rather than plastic bags. It was Duncans chocolate at the time, which was then replaced with yorkies. There were biscuit browns and chicken liver pate for example, very sophisticated. The oatmeal block was always a favourite for me and the boiled sweets were accessible. The hot chocolate sachet and other random bits all got thrown in with the porridge which at the time required water to be added to the dry mix. Boil in the bag meals were available in shiny silver pouches. Corn beef hash was essentially mashed potato with what resembled tobacco strands. Everything was delicious when hot but of course to remain tactical there were no fires at night. One of my favourite puddings was the rice pudding because it was great cold but there was a treacle sponge I think and that thing was a solid block for a very long time but if you had the luxury of heating it for a long while it was amazing. If it was a weekend exercise we would always bring additional food with us because we were always hungry. As always stuff your face with as much as you can handle before going out. Porridge, fried bread, cooked full breakfast....

During my service, 1960’s - 1990’s, the 24 hr. Rat packs as well as food, always contained a small envelope of Toilet Paper. Rarely used on short day exercises and frequently discarded. BUT during the Falklands War, when we had to make one 24 Rat pack last several days the Toilet Paper gained much respect. It was often only just enough. It was strong stuff too, you could even write on it. It also became the culprit for blocking up the civilian plumbing when you had the luxury of using a civilised WC. On extended operations I can assure you every scrap of the food was consumed.

It's been a while, but when I was serving the fuel was hexamine blocks. Plenty of heat but cleaning mess tins was a shocker. Is dragon fuel the new stuff? One of the hazards with hexie was the fumes. I saw you overlapped the mess tins when boiling. I remember a mate's oppo doing this when brewing up. Hexie fumes went down into the water and they both vommed up instantly. None of us laughed. Much.

I did a Marines obstacle course as a civilian and found the calories in the energy sachets pretty disappointing (24h pack). I decided that I would end up enormous if I ate it all after just the obstacle course. I guess if you are out all day, you need the energy. I've stored the sachets in my car just in case I break down. I've kept the chocolate cake to eat though. I got menu 9 - the heated meal was yummy when I was cold and wet.

I'm guessing you've got the opportunity to go out in the field more than one weekend a year 😂 I like the way you pack your rations. Since I passed MOD 3 back in February, I've chined off the mess tins for a metal mug, and using the pouch I used for my mess tins to cram most my rations for the day. I definitely wouldn't mind seeing how you pack your kit. Be nice to get more ideas in packing my own kit. Although, I will have to wait until next April to do the next ITR CCS weekend 😤

just bought some of the 2024 ones. Things have certainly changed a lot. I can remember serving in NI. 11 days straight in an OP same rat pack Lancashire hot pot!!! Got back in for 3 days then back out on another OP job. Guess what Lancashire hot pot!!!! Not amused as were the rest of the patrol. Turned out the storeman could not be arsed mixing it up so you got diff rats. We only carried a couple of days initailly when inserting into a job then when we got re supplied thats when we realised what an arse he was. Pretty sure he got thumped by one of the blokes who suffered the same fate as my patrol. We had to eat cold all the time and it got to you by about day 2!!

Monkeys don't smoke Not sure if the modern army still used the phrase when training recruits and junior officers? you may want to do the smell test when using issue rations and civilian alternative to boost the flavours, even your toiletries need to be plain, scented soap scented talcum powder all giveaways to the enemy. On exercise it is a question of how far do you wish to take it you will be surprised how much information you can pick up in doing sweeps along the route you take. During a training X a quick sweep of the area before we brewed up we found 20 hex burners one wash kit and a mark 5 helmet, this could mean we had 20 to 40 plus opposition nearby auto indicated but a couple of them were careless and sloppy. We picked up the trail by the sweet wrappers they had dropped plus section commander's notebook which gave us battle plan in the run up to it including the code words radio traffic. To crown it two of us walked to one group having a meeting in the middle of the track to which we stood behind them and listen to the briefing it took them a few minutes to realise we were there. The joys of having members of our group who had seen active service during Indonesian conflict and an Aussie who did his time in Vietnam.
