I don't think he's wrong though. As an assassin you have mostly kill pressure in lane as a tool and almost all assassins are melee, so you will always be outlaned by like a viktor or something. Plus zhonyas is pretty strong and with the introduction of crown you can basically never die as a mage in lane if you play correctly which is not like super challenging to do I would say.

A good ranged champ can just perma push you under turret level 2 and get level 3 first, then they just let the wave bounce back and hold it on their side and you can never do anything without your jungler.
