I really like the way it looks with the old truck body on it. I still think a big old log would work for the front bumper. Just in between the tracks make a flat place on the back of the log, lag bolt a piece of metal and weld a couple of mounting arms on. What ever you decide I am sure it will look cool.

Looks like it was built on a Light Tank MkVI chassis. Am I right?
@MFKR6967 жыл бұрын
It must have been an utter *blast* getting that bent-track steering system to work properly, eh? If it was me building it, I probably would have welded the mid-ship suspension supports/steering assemblies solid to the frame and converted the final drive to a triple-diff setup to achieve steering, as handling well in turns is not something that Universal Carriers were ever known for, and triple-diff setups can neutral-steer, to boot, which a Universal Carrier can't even dream of doing. I'm planning on building a Universal Carrier-esque tracked vehicle one of these days, using an old Jeep Comanche cab that I've had sitting around for ages. The only problem is sourcing parts. I'll probably just end up taking measurements off a built Universal Carrier and copy the geometry with a standard truss-ladder frame maybe made of I-beam material. In Southern Ontario, real tank chassis', let alone suspensions, don't come even close to cheap or easy to find. On the other hand, it's easy to take measurements, draw everything out in CAD, and maybe make something that looks like it was meant to be that way while using nothing more than the bogies, sponsons, idlers and drive wheels from a Universal Carrier. Also, a truss-frame would probably make the end-result much lighter and more maneuverable, while allowing for a more seamless integration of the truck cab into the chassis, which could be built to achieve that. Come to think of it, if I had a Universal Carrier laying around, I would probably strip everything out of the hull, scrap the hull and then make a chassis that would have the same dimensions in all of the critical parts as the original, but is much lighter, as when it comes down to it, all of that "armor" (I'm using that term fairly loosely here) on the Universal Carriers is just dead weight on a non-military vehicle. Getting rid of all that weight would also make things much easier on the tracks, suspension and drive sprockets. Great build, though. It makes me a little proud to see that flag hanging off the back of such a bad-ass build.
@ShawnCFarm7 жыл бұрын
Thanks man. The center steering was cut and welded to the frame long before I got it. Its been converted to use two master cylinders the wheel cylinders to steer. Shes a full on track drager now. Brengun carriers are really hard to fin now and if you find one it will cost you
@MFKR6967 жыл бұрын
Good stuff. You have done what I have wished I could do since I was old enough to remember my Grandfather's war stories, all of which involving the Mk IV Universal Carrier he served on as an "Assistant Driver"/Gunner. Building a Mk IV Universal Carrier will remain on my bucket list indefinitely, sadly it seems. Guess I'll have to make due with the Tamiya or Dragon 1/35 model kits. I plan to make one for every variant that saw service during the war, Canadian or otherwise. Right now I'm working on my second one, which is the variant that had an AT gun mounted on it, and my next one will probably be the Engineer variant. The only kit I've finished so far was the RCAC-issued Recce variant.
