Ratt covering Aerosmith, who were covering The Rolling Stones, who themselves were covering Rufus Thomas. All four versions are pretty great. I used to have this EP many years ago, before Round and Round came out and very few people (outside of L.A.) knew who Ratt was. Time Coast Records. Nice and raw.

He had such a great vocal style back then. He didn’t sound like all the other typical metal howlers who were always trying (and failing) to sound like Rob Halford or Bruce Dickinson. Steven had a more snotty, garagey, and dare I say it… punk style that stood out from the herd. I was never into 80’s hair metal, but I always made an exception for (early) Ratt. The first EP that this is from, and Out Of The Cellar are great, classic stuff that never gets stale.

Yep. This, or rather their first EP from ‘83 on Time Coast Records was my introduction to Ratt. My girlfriend at the time was the daughter of a radio station promo exec, so he’d get all these promo records before they were even released, and basically anything that wasn’t safe, radio-friendly garbage that sounded like Billy Squier or Foreigner, he’d give to my ex… and if it was anything loud and raw, she would then give it to me. Anyway, I loved that EP, even though my thing back then was more punk and post-punk. I used to play it constantly in ‘83-‘84… and then Round and Round came out, and they got big. I don’t hate the later stuff (or at least Out Of The Cellar), but they were never as great as they were on that first EP.

“It’s been done many times”… by who? Are you talking about Aerosmith? The Stones? Rufus Thomas? The latter did the original, back in 1963. The Stones covered that version on their first album in ‘64, and then Aerosmith covered the Stones version on their first album in ‘73. This version (Ratt’s) is a cover of the Aerosmith version… so it’s a 4th generation cover. Who else has covered this?
