According to a study done by NC state University around 80% of snake bites were caused by the person trying to capture or kill the snake. Attempting to kill the snake is the number one way to get bitten. If you’re on a trail and encounter one leave it alone and go around it giving it a nice distance. If it’s in your yard and you want it to leave spray it with a hose and it’ll go on it’s way. Snakes are not aggressive they are defensive. They will not go out of their way to get you, and they do not want to bite you. A snake would much rather use its venom to get a tasty meal, than waste it on defending itself. It takes a lot of time and energy for them to produce more venom.

1:30 "When you see a snake on the trail, the biggest thing you can do is step back." This is wisdom that should be obvious to anyone. But the video is full of images of people barreling along on the trails, not looking ahead or displaying any sort of respect or caution, letting their dogs poke around under rocks and bushes, and in general behaving as if they own the place instead of being the polite visitors they should be. One guy tells of riding along on his bike and being unable to stop in time when a snake "came right out in front" of him. So, of course, there will be confrontations with the creatures who make their homes there.

Rule number one, if biten, keep the heart rate down. If you have others with you let them carry you to the car or ambulance. Stay calm as best as you can. You want to limit the venom flow through the body.

It's just a rattlesnake! Why such a big deal. Deep fried rattlesnake is great! Been catching them with my bare hands since I was a kid.
