Rauma River, Fly Fishing for Salmon in Extreme Surroundings

Rauma River have had the parasite, Gyrodactylus salaris, for a number of years. Gyrodactylus kills most of the Atlantic salmon in the river. 2021 was the official opening of salmon fishing in the river after successful treatment!
Fishing was tough due to warm and stable weather, but it was a great experience to be back in this famous river. Luckily I also fished some of the smaller rivers in the area that provided me with more success than Rauma.

Hi! Thank you! Gamle Fiva and Langåkeren. Unfortunately, I have a bad feeling as the opening this year was terrible in Rauma and last year was also really bad. I don’t think they have counted salmon in the river yet, but if it’s still below the spawning number for the river, then I’m afraid the river will be closed for several years :(

I've been waiting a long time your film. What a clarity of the water😮. Place look like paradise but it could be few more bigger fish in it. Sure you didn't blank on this trip so wasn't too bad at all😀. I've been fishing twice already this season. 2nd tripwas interesting, we've got 40-60 mph winds upstream and terrible rain and hills stones going sideways😆 (no fish between 4 of us) so I think you got really good weather for fishing and got few fish. Tight lines for new season🤞

I totally agree, there must have been some more big fish in there ☺️ it can often be even harder to spot the fish in clear water than whiskey colored water 😅 please give me a report if you catch any, it’s exciting to hear how the fishing is over at your place! Tight lines!

Salmon fishing its not easy, could be frustrating, could be no fish for week, could be no fish for months or even years but that makes it so interesting. Not everyone would understand that why wee love salmon fishing😄, I think we are sick😁

Forgot to ask you, it's very interesting you are using mainly tube flys and specially sunrays, did you ever try hitch fly, bombers or just very small flys? Especially in summer time when there is plenty grilse about

@@tomaszpokrzywa3169 I agree, you never know how long it will take before you catch a salmon and it can take years as you say.. yes I tried hitching the fly quite a lot on that trip, by using the two handed rod and floating line. I had perfect hitching drifts on several of the pools without any sign of fish 😆 bomber I did not try, because there was no obvious reason places where the fish would stop for a long time. I know that some caught salmon on the hitch later that season further upstream in the river :)

Hello friend. Great channel, I have subd. Just a question please, I will be in Norway for 10 days in August, not for fishing, but want to bring a fly rod along. What weight rod would you suggest? Would a 5wt be too small? Ive never caught a salmon, but am happy to focus on "easy to catch fish", like trout. But if a salmon bites then that is fine also :) Thank you, JJ from South Africa

Hi mate:) I you like to combine fresh and sea water fishing I would suggest bringing a weight 6:) for salmon I mostly use class 7 if I use a single handed rod :)

You may have to build 2m high wall in all streams in norway, because only atlanticsalmon can jump over wall to upstreams, please!🏳🏳🏳

Hello, how is the fishing this time of year? Me and some buddies are going to Norway next week and want to fish in Rauma but we are scared of the declining fish population from the parasite.

Hi, fishing this time of year is normally good, but it’s been very slow this year and past week with only 9 fish caught on the whole river. The river is now free from the parasite, thus this is something else causing the low catch numbers :/

@@adamostman3509 seems like most rivers have low catches this year. Upper Orkla and Gaula fish quite well but don’t have that spectacular view. Eira and Rauma are stunning, but fish really bad this year. Beiarelva is beautiful too, but I’m not sure how the season has been there. Finnmark is beautiful too!:)

Also I fish single-handed flyrod only over here as they're quite small rivers but I still have yet to hook up on the fly! Do you have any tricks or tips for fishing single handed? And what a great salmon on single-handed well done!! 👍

Thank you! I was very happy to catch the 95 cm fish which is also a good sized salmon in Norway ☺️ later that season (end of June) the run of medium and large sized fish stopped and only smalll grilse was present:/ next year I fear there won’t be big fish in the river due to the extremely low number of returns of 3-7 kg fish. Still, the surroundings by river Rauma is amazing and should be seen 🤩
