After receiving a few requests to begin making Rav vast tutorials, I have begun recording a few beginners lessons.
This will be a multi part series discussing a variety of topics having to do with owning, playing and caring for a rav
This video goes through:
-Introduction to tongue drums/Rav
-The significance of the slit tongues
-Where to hit, and the different tones it creates
Part two, to be released soon, will begin to discus striking technique, scales and sound comparisons.
I am no expert, but more than happy to share my experience, gained from my time playing!

KZbin needs more ravdrum tutorials, great initiative! Not surprisingly though, most handpan tutorials can be used for the ravdrum too, and I also find darbuka rhythm tutorials great for inspiration.

Thanks for all the great videos. They are very helpful. I've had my Rav for a few days. I find it difficult to strike the 2 tongues closest to my body to get a good sound from them. Do you have any suggestions?

Absolutely! If you are playing a Rav, you could also use light mallets as well, and that would definitely minimize your hand strike force. 🙏🎶

Thank you for your videos! Just ordered my first RAV Drum (the B Kurd for its versatility) in the Black Friday sales.. Just wondered- I have a wedding band on my left ring finger.. is it always best practice to remove the ring when playing the rav drum to avoid damage or is there anything that that can be done to protect the drum from the ring without removing it (as it takes quite a bit of effort to remove it and don't want to risk losing the ring when out and about with the drum)? Thank you

I would love to see a tutorial focused on non tonefield percussive strikes. Also non standard strikes are fun, like hitting with your nails or knuckles.

Also, have you tried the closed fist strike as seen in Nadishana - Zero Density, I can't seem to get it to work. While we are at this video, the palmmute technique is worth noting, and pretty tough to pull off.

Never hit a drum but want a rav and learn, but which one to choose? Like all sorts of music, sing along with them (bad but at home who cares) from christmas to the 60's , from annie lennox to relaxing lounge music ... could you give me a hint?

I would go for either a B kurd, B celtic or D amjor, if you like a bit more nostalgic and happy sounding!

I've been experimenting with the harmonics and if you mute the wing of your C3, strike the G3 wing, and the release the C... it gives it the "bending effect" i love these things!

Awesome stuff man!! I've seen some videos where people are using 2 ravs to play songs. My question is it possible to play almost anything on one rav using the different hitting techniques you show? I'm not to familar with how scales work, so basically can anything almost be played on one rav, just the "feel' might be different from one to the other ? Thanks man !

Hey Tyler, It really depends on the song. You could feasibly use the primary notes and fifths (on the same tongue) to reach other scales. That is the challenge and beauty of these instruments, with a limited number of notes, you have to learn phrasing and pattern differently! So in short, yes, but you may need manyscales to have close to a chromatic (all note scale)You will certainly love it if you get one!

Got my first drum yesterday and went all in on it. Woke up this morning with the bones on my fingers hurting lol. Maybe I'm hitting too hard?

Definitely hitting to hard. You will be a bit sore at first, it I would just take a break and take it slow when you get going again! If I bust for four hours, my hands are definitely sore the next day. Just like playing guitar at a show and having sore callouses/ fingers the next day

Not as easy as I thought but after about 30 minutes I fell into a groove. Coordinating both left and right is weird but I'm determined and hopeful! When I first played it I was disappointed because it didn't seem very loud.......wait for it.......then my dishwasher stopped running and it was like 💥 boom, loud! LOL Fingers are sore but Lee mentioned the silicone rings which I luckily had and that saved me, must have spent at least four hours (trying) playing. Excited and addicted! Grateful mostly. 🙏🏼❤️🕉
