You’re who I’ve been looking for!!! Looking for the same type of setup (awning, rooftop tent, etc...) but don’t have any idea where to start as far as the install of the tent? Did you use the stock crossbars? If not what’d you go with? Also, which tent did you buy? Awesome video man✌🏽

Hey thank you! Our set up has been great so far, but of course there are so many options to choose from for the rack, tent, awning, etc. So much of it is preference, but ultimately we went with a FrontRunner rack system, the iKamper Mini Rooftop tent, and an ARB awning. I also mounted our recovery boards under the roof rack just in case. For our tent purchase and installation, we worked with Rhino Adventure Gear and they were super helpful with the whole process. Highly recommend checking them out!

Do you sleep in the IKamper mini with the dog? We are torn between the Mini and 2.0. Need space for two adults and medium size dog.

We do sleep in the iKamper with our small dog. Its no problem with the 2 of us + our 18lb dog. We could fit a medium size dog, though it would be a little tight. I will say Dijana and I are on the smaller side (5'2" and 5'8") so it works great for us. Larger people might need a bigger tent, like the full size iKamper. If you have a vehicle & rack that can support the bigger iKamper, it might be a better option. We went with the Mini since we have a smaller crossover SUV.

Thanks! Some RAV4 owners have mounted directly to the OEM crossbars, but we opted to get a more sturdy rack system from Frontrunner that also allows us to mount our awning, and recovery boards.

Love the build on your RAV4! I've got a Slimline coming for our 2019 RAV4 and I'm stoked to put a rooftop tent on there - but! I'm torn between the Skycamp 2.0 and the mini. Seeing the mini on yours makes me think it's a good size for me, my wife, and our kinda-big dog. Do you know how far out the ladder comes when the tent is out? And also what brackets did you use to mount the Mini to the Front Runner rack?

Thanks! yea we love the frontrunner rack + iKamper mini combination. We are on the smaller side (I'm 5'8" and Dijana is 5'2"), so the mini is plenty big enough for us and our small dog. Not exactly sure how far the ladder comes out, but it is enough to open the doors when the tent is deployed. Hi, awesome video. Did you mount the roof tent on the cross bars that came with the car? Or did you get another roof rack. I just got the Lunar Rock TRD too, I wanna put a rooftent, but not sure if I need to get a different rack

Thanks for watching! We have a FrontRunner rack that the tent is mounted to. The stock cross bars are not quite as strong (however some people do mount tents to them, just be careful). Aftermarket cross bars are generally much stronger and have higher weight ratings, so I would recommend aftermarket cross bars, or some type of full rack system. A lot of RAV4 owners are installing the Prinsu rack, however it requires removing the headliner of your car. There are a few options! Hope that helps!

Thanks! Yes the tent is permanently attached. It can be removed, but takes some time so we leave it on always. Our RAV4 is the 2020 TRD Off Road model, and it came stock with these Falken Wildpeak AT tires.

Hi there, that setup looks amazing! Quick question, does the iKamper SkyCamp Mini fit on standard Toyota roof racks? I have seen how the mechanism clips on, just curious as to the clearance requirements.

Hey, the SkyCamp mini does come with clamps to fit on normal cross bars. If you have the stock Toyota cross bars it should fit. However, the stock cross bars do not usually have a high weight capacity compared to aftermarket cross bars or roof rack systems.

How did you get the mounting hardware for the Front Runner Slimline to adapt to the factory Adv and TRD roofrack? Front Runner Now just has the Slimline II and it appears to only mount to the non Adv/TRD factory roof rack.

Unfortunately Front Runner does not have TRD/Adventure specific fitment for the Slimline rack. We went to their shop in SoCal and they developed a custom fitment as part of their TRD/Adventure fitment design. What they set up for us is not available to the public yet. Essentially it is a grab-on system that mounts to the raised roof rails. The other alternative is removing the raised roof rails.

I see you went with the ikamper mini. Was the ikamper 2.0 too big for the Rav4, or did you have your sights set on the mini the whole time? I'm also looking to build the same setup in the next couple of weeks but with a 2.0 if it fits.

Nice! Yea the full size iKamper is awesome but I was afraid it would hang over the front of the RAV too much and just look awkward. My wife and I are not huge people so the iKamper Mini is more than enough for the 2 of us to sleep comfortably with our small dog.

Hey, it is probably possible, though the SkyCamp 2 is much longer than the mini and would probably hang over the front of the roof over the windshield a bit. Might work, but would look strange on the RAV4.

Thanks! Yes the tent is permanently attached. It is 125lbs, so somewhat difficult to lift considering its up high on the roof. Also we use it frequently enough it just makes sense to keep it on all the time.

Hey, no problem, happy to answer! We decided to upgrade our roof rack system before installing the tent & awning. We have a FrontRunner rack that allows us to mount our tent, awning, and recovery boards on the roof of the vehicle. The stock cross bars are not rated for as much weight, so they are not as strong as aftermarket roof rack systems. Also having a platform system vs just cross bars allows us more versatility in what we can mount on the roof of the car. So far it has been worth it given how much we use our roof rack & tent set up.

Absolutely! It is an expensive tent, but we love it. It is OK in hot weather, about the same as any other tent. We got a battery powered fan that helps in the heat.

Thanks!! The iKamper mini is about 125lbs. With our roof rack, rooftop tent, awning, and gear in the trunk, we definitely get some sag in our suspension and lose some ground clearance. We will be upgrading to new suspension soon with stiffer springs and a lift to counteract the sag due to heavy weight of all our gear. Overall totally worth it still!

What’s the max weight the roof rack can hold?

The FrontRunner rack is rated to 600+lbs. However, the RAV4 is rated for only about 180lbs of weight while driving. When you are parked / still, it can hold more weight than while driving.
