Apparently this was originally intended to be the background theme for the original The Legend of Zelda. I'm glad it didn't make it, this doesn't quite have the same effect as the theme they used.

No, it was only going to be the title theme (title screen and opening crawl). The familiar, iconic overworld theme was always the same. Since they couldn't use Bolero (wasn't in the public domain yet), Koji Kondo did a Bolero-ish remix of the overworld music to use for the title instead.
