Absolutely amazing performance. It captures the savage brutality of the time and place (WWI in Europe). Yet in all it's savagery, it is sublimely and awesomely beautiful.
Samson François's extravagant lifestyle, good looks, and passionate but highly disciplined playing, gave him a cult status as a pianist. He was particularly admired for his performances of Chopin, Schumann, Debussy, and Ravel. First made in UK on Columbia SAX 2394 Blue & Silver ES1 Stereo Label. Program: Ravel, piano concerto in G Major, and piano concerto in D Major for the left hand. Samson François, piano, accompanied by the Paris Conservatoire Orchestra, conducted by Andre Cluytens.

(Crossposted) The first recording I ever heard of this, and still my favourite, perhaps not the absolute best performance, but wonderfully over-engineered, with the piano (when it finally comes in at 2:05) 20 feet wide, bass-heavy as a pipe organ, and louder than the full orchestra! Turn up the volume and stick your head between the speakers! Can you spell e-a-r-g-a-s-m? (Does anyone know if the piano was a Bösendorfer?

Ravel's piece was a masterpiece born of amputation!
