Magnifique... Dommage que tant de sont concentrés sur le Boléro que Ravel a composé à toute vitesse et a lui même caractérisé comme une pièce qui n'est pas vraiment de la musique.

Fully transcendent! With all the talk about Bradley Cooper and his nose, I think we are forgetting Lenny. One of the great geniuses of the 20th Century, here he is, with a television camera right up in his face, calmly playing and conducting at the same time. This is possibly the most beautiful piece of music ever written (Adagio assai from Ravel's piano concerto in G) and Lenny feels it to the depths of his soul. So exquisite, and so handsome. Bradley, you have a big nose AND big shoes to fill...

This is one of the few performances in of this mvt. in which the listener is enraptured and transcends reality into sheer bliss for a brief moment. Bernstein becomes the perfect medium for listeners to commune with such masterful beauty and pure emotion. Not to mention, Ravel's sense of simplicity that leaves one in awe of what music can be. Thank you, Bernstein, and thank you, Ravel.

like bernstein, i have played piano for more than half a century. he was a pianist of great talent who didn't play much, a composer who let time slip past him (hear 'jeremiah'), a conductor who only knew what he wanted when it was beyond his reach... as a child, i disliked him because he didn't do enough, and i thought he didn't care. now i know he did: i heard his heart breaking in these notes, and he broke mine, as well. ah, lenny, i misjudged you--may i do half as well, ever... thank you.

This is easily the stupidest comment about Bernstein I've ever seen. The only thing you have in common with him is how long you played the piano. He didn't care enough? He's a genius. What the hell is wrong with you?

Really touching story. I hope all is going well with you. Its in our nature as humans to immediately think downly of someone when they do or say things that aren't in our taste. But remember, never judge a book by its cover. Everything we do is for a purpose whether we know it or not. Not everything we do may sit well with others. nothing we do will ever meet the satisfactory of others, but at the end of the day none of that matters as long as you and everyone else are playing their role of being respectful to others and that we're happy and content with ourselves. This also includes not judging people and being so quick to making assumptions based on their actions as you have no way of knowing why they do what they do.
@tia904

@@davisatdavis1 Lots of self righteous talk... In the end people like him eclipse thanks to their means other very talented artists and performers just like Mozart has placed so many excellent composers into the attic... Very sad. Media's fault indeed but it is helped along with financial resources. Wish humans were not such followers.

THIS IS NOT TOO SLOW MAN. This is the correct tempo, and surtainly the most expressive version ever of this part!!!! No one darred to play it so slow and emotinal, cos that demand´s a darring that most musicians don´t have. You see Bernstein was the music itself as Christa Ludwig once said in an interview, and I agree a 100 %, and that shows here. He loves this piece og music. And that is the way it has to be, and regretingly not is the case most of the time. Unique music that is what this is.!!

For many years, I thought Bernstein belonged to the classic generation of musicians, I was ill-prepared or even want to secretly-admitted that he was one of the very best conductor and piano player of the time. With years passing, I truly believe now that he played the very best Ravel piece here, even compared with many of the best piano players there is now. I could not find a better interpretation and intensity of playing better than he did.

It's the way it is supposed to be played... He didn't invent the tempo. Adagio, 60 beats, right? It's slow. He plays well but let's not attribute to him more than is due just because he got lots more public attention and opportunities than other very worthy musicians.

This is SO Bernstein! Ever try to EITHER conduct or play this particular piece? What's going on here is a technical tour-de-force from Lenny (not to mention from the highly-alert orchestra), even before you get to swoon at the beauty of it all. I think, with the conductor at the piano, the second movement suddenly becomes the most difficult. So much gauzy, floating time to hold together... the players staring into his eyes for every indication of what he wants... very very difficult. Bravo!
