I would guess that it breathed like a human because it was. Human beings with a screw loose can be scarier than any wildlife. It creeping around your tent is is worrisome no matter that it was. I would have been scared purple.

The old batteries probably had a little charge in them and after a rest they can sometimes act kinda funny. But I don’t trust batteries that act up. You are probably as well off to have pitched the doll in the trash.
