The jingle dress dance comes from the Ojibwe people in Ontario and is known to be a healing dance. As Indigenous people, we believe in the healing of this medicine.
I was called to the jingle dress dance at a very young age and have now been a jingle dancer for over 10 years. For me, dancing means healing, love, and the honour of carrying on such an important gift given to us by the Creator.

Chi-Miigwech for sharing! Not sure people will realise the, actual, weight of these Jingle Dresses and the stamina it takes to dance these intricate steps, so delightfully, wonderfully and expressively. A highly commendable credit to her Nation.

@@ianmelonie6440 My comment was a generalisation. Interesting that you have helped to make a Jingle Dress, for a friend of yours and as a consequence, are aware of the weight of them and the physical effort it would take to dance so elegantly when wearing regalia of this style. Thank you for your contribution.

Wow, thank you for sharing this. The jingles sound so different out in nature on soil, among the trees. I can hear it as water running over stones, in small waterfalls. It sounds like there is chanting at a distance, and that also sounds like nature. Everything together sound alike an amplification of natural forest sounds. ❤

I only have three photographs of my Shawnee grandmother Wa-apa-tee-wis ("White Feather"). She was born in a tipe village near Old Shawneetown, Illinois, about 1884, and died of pneumonia in 1929 in Indianapolis at the age of about 44. Pity I never knew her, my father's mother First photo was her high school graduation portrait, taken in 1902, hand color tinted, and she was made up to look like a white woman. She hated it. Then, a photo of her in sepiatone taken at the Marion County Fair in Indianapolis in 1916, where she was dancing under a tree in a pretty buckskin dress with a few shells on it, holding a tambourine. The last photo I have of her was taken at her wedding to my grandfather, James Harrison Long (1886-1963) in 1917, also sepiatone, showing her in a wedding dress she made herself, of indigenous styles and materials. My father lovingly wrote "Mother" across the top of the photo. I did, however, know her real biological brother, Russell Running Horse, aka: Russell Morgan Fleetwood (1886-1976) who lived in Indianapolis from 1920 to his passing. I met him in 1959 on a family reunion trip there from Los Angeles with my Dad, at age 12, and I spent the day with my great uncle Russell, who told me stories of our Shawnee heritage, and he gave me the name Wapahilo ("Soaring Eagle") which I proudly display at Pow-Wows. I love to participate in the Round Dance, the Sacred Circle of our People, and enjoy watching the dancers in all their finery.
