I think Porter Robinson is a great example of doing something because you are good at it and doing something because you love it. His old music is great. I remember seeing about him during Tiestos club life tour. He had an interesting set but I wasnt really taken by it. During that mid 2000 era I remember everyone being all about dubstep and he sounded a lot like everyone else 🤔 Easy was the first track that got my attention and Shapherdess had me hooked. I'm glad that he evolved and found his sound. How many artists can you think of that did the same old stuff and aren't around any more? Lol

Exactly. I remember when porter released sea of voices on his soundcloud as a single and thinking to myself “WOW this is like, some next level emotional shit.” And then came sad machine followed by the album release. There’s not a single track on Worlds I don’t love. I can’t say that about any other album. I’m not looking for another worlds album In Porter because I know he isn’t the same Porter from 2014. I trust that this new album is going to grab ahold of me emotionally just like worlds did, just in a different way.

I've actually waited so long for this.. @@davidpicarazzi Language seems like it was first foray into music he actually wanted to make. His own style from the heart. He was anxious about releasing it, but it was a smash, so it basically greenlit Worlds for him i think. if you listen to his live sets from before 2014 there is all sorts of bleed in of his personal style but he'd only ever flirt with it haha. For ekowraith, he was mostly happy hardcore/ “hard dance”, for the spitfire ep it was electro with elements of dubstep “complextro” (check knife party), worlds is the one album that’s really hard to tie down to one genre, but I’d describe as a mix of synth pop and future bass. Virtual self was basically every dance genre under the sun besides dubstep, and well for his final album... I’d call it the some of best pop I’ve ever heard, although there are elements of breakbeat.

I don't know about you guys, but when I listen to his progression, it literally has a story. I may be out of line to say this but it seems early on he wanted chase fame, he lost himself in the dubstep and a little part of his identity, and then in 2014 he had a rebirth where he became distinguished and "his own" producer. Once again I could be out of line since he isn't my taste of edm but it's just how the music made me feel.

Porter is truly a prodigy. He was already doing amazing things with his early music that most artists spend their entire careers hoping to get even just a small taste of. But when he released "Worlds"....shit man, NOBODY was ready. I don't even think he totally understood at the time the impact that album would have on not just the edm world, but on music in general. I doubt we'll ever see anything on the same level again. at least in this generation ha. Long live Porter.

Vandalism was my first song of him. Didn't even know it was made by Porter until years later. Saw him live for the first time at SnowGlobe, Lake Tahoe, NV, US and I didn't even know that was him too! Shit was sooo damn magical listening to Worlds for the first time in the snow on New Years. Even kissed a girl I met at midnight under those 2014 Fireworks.. Thank you Porter for the memories! 【=◈︿◈=】

I discovered Porter listening to random EDM in a library. Then all of a sudden goodbye to a world played, then sea of voices, I cried, then did donuts in the rain at night in the parking lot to sea of voices. Forever will stick with me…

it's kind of crazy to see how porter robinson's first songs sounded almost... painfully generic. But right at 1:27 it's almost like just a brief flash of budding brilliance. And at 1:38 You can see it beginning to bloom into the immensely recognizable style we know, where each song is just dripping with raw emotion.

the big milestones in porter's career as songs i think are as follows: ekowraith - booming track: this was really his first release to have fairly noticeable success and the first big impact on his name as a producer porter robinson - say my name: one of his earliest "complextro" hits and the first large success under his own name porter robinson - language: the transition into more EDM styles of songwriting and progression, starting to leave the "dance floor" aspect of his music behind porter robinson - (all songs from Worlds): his first full length album saw him lean out of the EDM style (while maintaining elements of EDM) and add much more emotional complexity and depth to his work. porter robinson - shelter: this is where he starts to produce music in the way he does nowadays, as well as being his largest song atm of writing this. he even got the MV done my A-1 pictures and premiered in Shibuya! virtual self - ghost voices: although the whole EP was a milestone, ghost voices was his first and only grammy nod as the time of writing this. the virtual self live tours put on a lightshow of no other caliber. porter robinson - nurture: this marks his most pop-driven, emotional, and intricate songwriting yet. he dives headfirst into embracing his vocal power and takes on more traditional songwriting structures in favor of the 4-on-the-floor style of many "worlds" songs. most would argue this is his best work to date.

I wholeheartedly agree to your statements. As much as his early productions were focused more on party songs, the ones after language are more on the storytelling side, which makes me emotional every time I listen to them.
