My son , who was also my best friend, fell asleep on May2, 2019 at age 41. For a year after that I watched quilting videos with Donna Jordan and lay on the couch crying. About three weeks ago I went down cellar and realized or remembered that I had stored bins of fabric that I wanted to use “one day. “ I suddenly felt it was time. I urgently gathered fabric and had my old Slantomatic sewing machine repaired, bought a humble Janome machine that has a walking foot and a little plexiglas table , and brought it all up to my son’s quiet woodworking shop where we had worked together making wonderful things out of wood for seven years. I spread out my stuff on our large rolling work tables and left the miter saws and table saw and all the many automotive tool boxes and machines right in their places pushed back to the walls. This shop also used to be an auto restoration shop when my son’s beloved father was alive. He was a master auto painter and the shop is full of his tools and machines neatly in order. I am surrounded by memories and echoes of happier days. But I have a spacious sewing area next to a Lotus Super Seven race car! I am making wonky pot holders, crooked snack size place mats. I keep finding and bringing up more of my fabric and sorting it, looking at colors and prints, noticing what I have, matching them. I have some of my mother’s unfinished projects. I have made blouses, dresses, a wool coat, doll dresses, goat blankets, a few quilts, but in my old age I can’t see well, I have astigmatism, l am out of practice, and I don’t have a manual for the Janome. But I think I want to try to master specific skills, like binding. And sewing straight seams. I love doing this. I expect to improve. And from my experience doing woodwork, I know how to put my head down and soldier on making a thousand things as efficiently as possible, while holding to the highest standards. Anyway, I wanted to share this with you because I just drink in everything you say and do like a hungry baby bird. I think you are wonderful. Thank you.

Thanks for your sharing, I loved that book, and made a piece of fabric from the ideas that I had a great time using in different projects over the years. Your insights are so right on! It has to be fun, or phooey, why do it. I have had so many people ask me to sell my things, because I share my makes on FB, and once upon a time I thought I would. However, that made me so stressed out for just the reasons you described, I stopped that in its tracks, and said, Oh No, I'm doing this for fun and for enrichment. Great ideas, thank you so much.

Thanks for doing the tutorials. To me its as if my mother were teaching me to sew. I say that even though I believe I am old enough to be your mother. The reason I say that is because so much of what we learn as children is from watching. I sat and watched my mother sew. I learn so much even now after having been sewing for more than 60 years. Even if you know how to sew you learn efficiency of movement and details of manipulation that you don’t learn unless you have an opportunity to watch.

+Lois Bruno Thanks so much for this comment! I usually film the entire construction of a project - then, provided I haven't angled my lamp in front of the needle or something like that, I spend a fair amount of time trying to decide what to include and how long to let the video get. I know some people would rather watch me do it than have me say 'just sew these together.' That is why I speed the video up so often. Also, I try never to gloss over the sticky details - which is my pet peeve with many of the DIY projects I have researched over the years. I've watched very few sewing tutorials, but for years I was always researching how to fix up my house - that was before KZbin came along and made it so easy to learn things! Thanks so much! Please keep in touch.

Zazu, thank you for confirming what I had always been thinking.....make what pleases you first- and hope that others love it too. It is something I needed to hear from a fiber artist. So many people have been telling me what to make- because that is what "people want". Your video has made me excited to start this journey of fiber art. Thank you!

+Syndi Mino To me the key is my relationship to the work as I am sewing. I've very clear when I make functional work that I am making this for the type of person who will like using it and be willing to pay the price I need to charge. For the bigger pieces I do exactly as you say - I please myself first. But yes, I do hope it will speak to others...

Thank you for sharing! I too was inspired by that book! I checked it out of the library and renewed it then took it back and checked it out again and again. After doing that for about 3 months in 2016 I put it on my wishlist on Amazon and Goodreads, low and behold I was gifted with it for Christmas 2016!

Zazu! Thank you so much for sharing I've never done fabric art like this! I have no budget at all but have managed to gather all kinds of fabric and thread and doohicky's I definately will find this book, I've actually done a lot of doodling and love to draw ,I have a vision of a tree and I want so much to recreate it with fabric! Your very gifted and I'm subscribed! To be able to share your talents and gifts your artistic side is so important! We truly do leave a little part of us in others when we share our talents that continues to grow and grow, that which you plant in them like a seed! That's what life is about in all we do in love, kindness, patience and ultimately our essence lives in others because we took the time to share them! Even our ART! I think one of the reasons some people don't tune into there artistic side is because of the fear of not having the skills or not having the necessary tool or "I'm not good enough" "I can't draw paint or sew" Everyone has an imagination! I took an old canvas and glue and just started gluing fabric to it and ribbon and oddly enough it looks like a quilt on a canvas! Right now I work with what I have! I say to anyone struggling with supplies or you want to experiment don't let your perfection stop you just glue it down and doodle with that fabric! Don't ever let your income get in the way of being creative in anything you do. To deny your creative side would be to "me" like "suffucating"! Subscribe to this channel and little by little you will not only acquire the skills and materials to create this kind of Art but you just might come up with a whole unique Art of your own and share that with others just like Zazu!

Dear Zazu Greetings. I am really grateful to you for sharing such a classic art work and it is helping me a lot in making beautiful collage works. Plz tell me about the threads. Which thread do you recommend for REA. I used same thread which i used for stichitng, but it spoiled my margins.. Regards
@ZazusStitchArt5 жыл бұрын
Sorry you had trouble. I actually use all sorts of threads for REA, but the stitches should be tight near the edge and you shouldn't cut too close for the type of fabric. Tightly woven fabrics, like batiks, are more stable after your trim them. Sorry.

again.thanks for the inspiration. maybe you will know: what it is called when you take one piece of material and cut it up . sew back together just for the color value? just one colorful fabric.

+Mic Kline I've never thought about this, but I will. It would be a while, I think, even if I were comfortable covering these topics. In the meantime, Etsy has a lot of resources like that for sellers. You might have to sign up for a shop, which is not a big deal. Then go to the MY SHOP TAB> EDUCATION AND SUPPORT> SELLER HANDBOOK. I would also check out your local farmers' market website. They can be a great place to get your feet wet selling. Maybe go to any art and craft shows you can to take it all in. Thanks so much for your support, comments and compliments. I'm flattered by your idea and happy to know I am making a difference for someone!
