For those wondering about the male. The male owl was probably also hunting. Female raptors are typically the aggressors and much larger than the males. It’s usually the females that fight off intruders. One thing that I do find very possible is that the intruder may have been an older sibling from an older clutch. The moment it saw the mother coming back it started begging for the food she brought and instantly took it away from her before she realized what happened.

Amazing video. My take is that it is probably an owl that was hatched in that nest before and it was still young. Probably still learning to hunt and was hungry so returned to the nest and found the chicks. At first it studied the situation but hunger got the better of it and it started killing the owl chicks and eating them. When the mother owl returned the younger owl begged for the food and was going after it as opposed to fighting the mother owl. The mother owl took in the reality and declared war in the invading owl. Now, it could be the invading owl was a fledgling from a previous year. Certainly it might explain why the mother didn’t attack immediately. Crazy stuff.

Ok apparently most seem lost as to what is happening. From someone who raise peacocks, I can tell instantly what is happening here. No other owl would go into a nest like that, unless it's a yearling. Yes folks, that's her last year's chick. Hence the dance it does wanting to be fed. It killed the nestlings thinking it would make mom start feeding it again. Clearly you see mom wasn't happy, as she would go into a rage every time she looked at her dead chicks, meaning she put alot of work into raising 3 chicks. I hope that clears it up for most, but that is nature. Seem it many times, never easy

Fairly certain that it was the mother of the nestlings that fled at the end of the confrontation. This can be distinguished as the one that leaves is the one with obvious eye damage. In the video, the owl without obvious eye damage can be seen eating the nestlings in a break in the fighting, not something a parent would do while trying to protect their kids. Additionally, the one that fled has slightly lighter mottling on her feathers, this lighter mottling can be seen on the returning parent at the start of the fight. From the looks of it, the parent received debilitating eye damage early into the fight, preventing it from having much chance of winning. There is no justice in this story.

Read the description and read the other people's comment. These are two large females. There is no adult male in this video.

Why was the intruder owl swaying back and forth so much? It gave me the creeps. 😢😨
@dr.emilschaffhausen468311 ай бұрын
That's what I thought. Seems like odd behavior like it was broken.
@silvermainecoons326911 ай бұрын
I first noticed the swaying around 9:09 right after it killed the first owlet. It’s very odd looking, it reminds me of how a cobra will sway back and forth right before striking. It’s also heartbreaking seeing the other two huddling together in the corner with what seems to be looks of horror on their faces. I know it’s anthropomorphic to think that but it’s clear how terrified they were. I’m glad to see someone else agrees with me.

@@silvermainecoons3269 its territorial behaviour dude and agression to try to scare off another competitor. it was 2 female owls, they will kill others young to ensure success of their young and less competition for food.

I notice that it did not open her/his eyes (only the mother's eye is visible on camera's night-vision).
@eddunn30213 ай бұрын
Owls do not have movable eye sockets and are fixed - they have to move their head to look around, Falcons and Eagles have limited eye socket movement as well and why you see them bobbing their heads - that's the reason for what we see as odd movements.

Damn this was terrible. The mother fought long and hard. Rightfully so, she left at the end. Poor babies 😢💔

People blaming the father owl for not "coming to save the chicks" have no idea how birds rotation work.

It’s so heart wrenching to note that every member of our animal kingdom is capable of their darkest side. So important to always never be too trusting, and to continually be alert, albeit not paranoid, over our children, ourselves and possessions. May GOD’s protection be over us & our loved ones, even now & always❤

When the bird flew in the other next the one in this nest heard it and started stomping feet why was it to make noise and try to scare something away
@scribble94316 ай бұрын
Welcome to animal kingdom guys. First owl was a male, typical for male animals like Lions, Tigers, Bears, and some birds of prey, they kill previous offsprings so they could pass on their genes.

im lost they where owl chicks, what was what they eat there own or the neighbors and who one the fight one escaped one left looking lost , how can you tell during fighting who was one mother one neighbor or what cant tell who one who flew off .

I couldn't really tell, but it appeared the mother owl blinded the intruder. Also seems she started feeding on her own offspring so the intruder wouldn't be able to have anything. She appeared to be very focused, attacking the intruder fiercely taking the right eye, then the left. That would be a death sentence for the intruder. Likely grounded and eaten by another ground dwelling predator. Likely after being harassed by crows if not killed by them.

Sadly the mother owls escaped at the last because the intruders turn out more stronger and still eating dead bodies at the last and both are sounding different,
@nadyemati464310 күн бұрын
Sorry but, the intruder escapes at the end, not the mother. And yes, the mother eats the chicks probably in confusion and stress. The mother almost killed the intruder

The mother owl kept on glancing at her dead chick while she was fighting and enraged her even more. Almost human emotions. At the end she on making noises like she was crying or at least very upset.

I don't think people are following well. The one at the end was the one who went back to eating the babies in the middle of the fight. That's the intruder. The mom had to leave because she was too tired to fight anymore. She's the one that was screeching through the entire fight
