Failure? They got both of them. What else could be better? Since they were still speeding when NOT being pursued, what makes you think they wouldn’t go even faster if they were being pursued? If they were going even faster with a pursuit, the danger to the public would be much greater even, probably, over a shorter distance. As horrible as those carjackings are, (and I would be TERRIFIED if it was me. BUT, even when terrified, I keep a cool head in an emergency. It is part of my personality that I have never consciously intended to do. Different people have different reactions to the same or similar situations. None of them are “WRONG.”) they are better than the higher risk of a fatal crash involving the public. If they were being pursued at higher speeds, EVERYONE was in greater danger of something worse than a carjacking. They hit plenty of vehicles under the no chase scenario. With a helicopter with the latest technology and with well trained pilots, it was just a matter of time before it was over. The police vehicles were close from a different direction, because they were there within seconds of hitting another car. It he had stayed within the city with intersections every block, coordinating that would have been harder in one way, because he could change directions so quickly and easier because they could concentrate resources in a tighter area. I am absolutely OK with high speed chases out on highways, freeways, and Interstates. They have radios where command can coordinate movement of available resources, but won’t know of a turn as quickly as with a helicopter. State police have helicopters, but it would be just a coincidence if a helicopter was close enough to a chase in progress to make a difference. I watch a lot of Arkansas State Police videos and those troopers do not hesitate to start a pursuit and will do a PIT, which they call a TVI, and MUCH higher speeds than most agencies that allow them. There are a couple Troopers who are legends in their TVI skills.
