To start 2020 off, I decided to do a solo 3000km surf road trip across the north and South Island of New Zealand.
Many people see solitude as isolation, far from other people. However, the true definition is the freedom of inputs from other minds. If you are alone in your thoughts, even on a crowded subway line, that is still a state of solitude. I decided to start 2020 completely on my own. Giving my brain a chance to relax from the processing cycle. I’m only starting to realize how important this is. Just think about it for a second: how minutes a day do you spent in true solitude? Yes, it is good to always be surfing an informational wave, always exposing yourself to new ideas and opinions. However, what many people, including myself, underestimate is just how many raw cycles of solitude are required to do that processing. If you are only exposing yourself to the information, not taking time to actually think about it , if you don’t do the work of being alone with your own thoughts, you’re probably extracting just a small fraction of the potential value of your brain. One of my goals of 2020 is being more conscious of this.
