RAW by itself cannot be used for any type of reproduction. It needs to be processed using a RAW processing software to an appropriate format suitable for your image destination. Popular format are TIFF, Jpeg and EPS. Adobe PSD is a format used for saving WIP files in Photoshop.

An image scan from a film negative into RAW is like making a digital negative. most things are captured. Why is it that the film scanners of modern cinema rather scan in motion jpeg ? Is it because of the file size ?

Great explanation, beautifully presented, thank you. I personally shoot jpeg most of the time, which my father likes to question (or even make fun of). The thing is, many good cameras shoot excellent jpeg, and in many cases we don’t really need the full control of the images provided by raw. In those cases, shooting jpeg saves memory space and saves time (for importing, quick adjusting and sharing). Some say raw+jpeg is the way to go, but that consumes even more battery and memory. Something I find interesting too is that some raw shooters I know tend to become lazier with the actual shooting as they get more experienced, because they get the illusion that with raw they can do anything post. For me that takes away something critical from the moment of taking the image. With most commercial use or difficult lighting though, raw is without a doubt the way to go :)

The correct answer is virtually always raw. If for some reason you don't need the raw file and the jpg was fine, you can always delete it. Even if you just use the embedded settings to process on the computer, you can use more powerful hardware to process the image differently. You can always change the amount of noise reduction and sharpness applied if you like. And yeah, the raw does take up a lot more space, but card space is cheap these days. This isn't 20 years ago when memory cards were small and expensive. A 32gb card isn't that expensive.

Another fantastic video... as always! I do not know if it has been mentioned yet, but another reason that I am excited to save my "digital negatives" (a.k.a. photo files) in the RAW format is that all of the additional information available in RAW files to current display devices (monitors, smartphones, tablets, etc.), presentation devices (printers) and current editing software (Lightroom, Photoshop, etc.) is only being put to use by the limitations of today's technology. As display devices and editing software continue to increase in sophistication and ability in the future I am excited to see what can be drawn out of those RAW files ("digital negatives") that is not being drawn out today. The more available information, the better. More actual, captured information will keep display devices and software from having to make as many computational guesses to fill in the holes.

But what you demonstrated so well, requires, IMHO, no demonstration at at all, at least for most of us. Let me repeat, the Video itself is impeccable.God bless you.

Raw vs. JPegFine is relevant for people wanting to do post processing. You want to keep in higher bit depths for editing. Just remember all your output devices, commercial printers computer monitors and even PostScript works in 8 bit/per channel world. Also Human eye can not detect more than 256 different levels per channel. So the value of RAW comes in when rounding errors get build up on repeated editing.

My thought and opinion is, unless you need to do editing in general and just want or need to share pictures straight away, shoot JPEG. However if you need to do light or heavy editing, you need to be shooting RAW. Editing in RAW is much better than editing in JPEG for the reasons mentioned. Also when saving JPEG files, it's better to save said photo file as a TIFF and not a JPEG. With a JPEG file, from what I've been told, every time you open said file if it's a JPEG, the quality degrades with every use. But with a TIFF file, I believe that doesn't happen.
@SmallSpoonBrigade
@SmallSpoonBrigade 2 жыл бұрын
Generally speaking, always shoot raw+JPG unless you have a specific reason to do something else. You can always delete the files you don't need later on if you like. As far as JPG goes, each time you save and resave, you do lose a bit, but a good program will keep the loss to a minimum by uncompressing it into an image with an array of pixels rather than cells and then when it recompresses the image, only the changed pixels will be affected. But, if you do anything to change the dimensions or the amount of compression, that can and will mess things up.

So in other words, jpeg for people who value their time and are skilled enough to get it right in camera, and RAW for people who have the time to endlessly fiddle with their images trying to fix their shooting mistakes? By shooting raw on your expensive Nikon Camera, you basically have a bunch of Data from Sony. Because Sony makes the sensor for that camera. Why buy an expensive camera where half of the cost comes from the digital processor inside if you're not gonna use it? You know, the one developed by a team of engineers with Ph.D's in image processing, color analysis, and film science that get paid 6 figure salaries. The result is that most RAWs done manually look like over processed and inconsistent crap. If you are producing any substantial body of work, and not just 20 photos a week, you don't have time to twiddle with RAWs. You bought this expensive camera, why not trust it to process the images? We used to trust labs to process our film. And he is wrong. A raw is not like a negative. Its more like an unprocessed negative. The JPEG is actually like your digital film negative. Just like with film, you can edit your jpeg a little, but if you under or over exposed it significantly,then that was just too bad.

If you have to correct, why not correct with a raw. I had a camera, my first digital, that did only JPEG. Coming from darkroom, I tried to burn/dodge and got all the weird bands in skies I could not identify. Sharpening is default with JPEG. In reality it must be customized to print size and medium. I only use JPEG now when immediate distribution is required.

Thanks Radha Sir!! This certainly rests the case by justifying both RAW and JPEG based on the objective and ability of the shooter. I have always preferred to shoot in both RAW and JPEG (in highest resolution) simultaneously. Needless to mention this "may" pose a challenge of space and speed to many shooters, I personally have never found that as a challenge, with my 128gb cfast. If each pixel is 16-bit, then total it is 13,011,968 x 16 = 208,191,488 bits = 26,023,936 bytes = 25,414 kilobytes = 24.818 megabytes.

Since RAW files are pure data files, even the 'Lossless Compressed RAW' files will be (theoretically) as good as Uncompressed RAW. 👍

Yes, exactly! That also clarifies some dubious information I came across recently. I knew that lossless audio files for example FLACs are compressed yet can reproduce the exact signal that would be produced by a similar WAVE file but someone mentioned that "lossless compressed" image files have a slight information loss specifically in the shadow-region...I was not convinced with that and I guess I was right, thanks again sir! ^__^
