Great video, will install it now on my 550D and try this out! Just to clear things up a little, in 8-bit, you have 256 colors PER CHANNEL, and there's 3 channels (red, green, blue). So 8-bit gives a possible palette of 256^3 = 16.7 million colors. 14 bit (2^14 = 16 384 colors per channel) -> 16384^3 ≈ 4.4 "thousand millions" palette In video language when speaking of 8-bit, it means per channel. When talking about monitors we say 24-bit which means 8-bit times 3 channels (R, G, B) = 24

So banding is usually caused by the zero in 420? Cause 16 million colors sounds like a lot. But isn't 3times 256 a lot less than that?!

***** It is 256^3 so 256*256*256 which gives ≈ 16.7 million possibly colors. 256 levels of red colors, 256 green and 256 blues that can be combined in 16.7 million different ways. The 420, 444 etc represents YUV color space where Y is luma and U and V are the chromas. 444 means that both Y U and V are in lossless format. But say in 420 format, 4=Y, 2=U and 0=V means that the luminance is lossless and the chroma U and chroma V are compressed. Very hard to explain the YUV color space but look on wikipedia for more info. You can think of it as being the resolution of colors where the first numer in 420 represents luminance (e.g. black and white) and the other numbers 2 and 0 represents colors along the U and V axis in the color space. It works differently from RGB cause in RGB space you don't have a separate luminance channel.

***** No problem. Search wikipedia for chroma subsamling and you will see examples of how the chroma resolution looks. For example with 4:2:2 and all formats except 4:4:4 you will see that the resolution of the color is worse than the luminance (b/w). That's why with 4:2:2 for example, it looks like the colors, especially seen with red colors, looks blocky, and that's exactly what it is. Don't remember the exact details but think of it as the chroma resolution (U and V channels) have half the resolution of the luminance (Y channel). So the blockiness in the colors comes from the fact that for a 4:2:2 1080p video the luminance has resolution 1920x1080 but the chroma (color information) is only half at 960x540 (don't remember exact details, but resolution will be lower than that of the luminance in a 4:2:2 scenario). For even more info google "chroma blur", that's when you apply gaussian blur but only to the U and V channels, very common when trying to pull a greenscreen key etc, to smooth out the chroma blockiness/pixelation.

Cobbsta I worked with the 70D as my main camera for a couple of years for shooting music video and it is an awesome camera. But unfortunately it does not have a port for clean HDMI to an external recorder. It cannot use an external recorder like the more recent 5Ds and 7Ds can.

I read somewhere that the 70D bottlenecks over 35 Mb/second in writing to the SD card. That would explain the 6-7 seconds limit, i.e. when the camera buffer is full. In other words, shooting RAW video on a 70D is really not a great option. The RAW images look great though

After looking at all the comments, seeing all the hurdles this will cause me, all the extra work flow, crazy short record times and a general pain in the butt experience it will be...... I will gladly save up for a little while longer and buy a Canon C100 and bypass all of this unnecessary chaos! If you do this as a hobby or just-for-fun tinkering, that is one thing, but at some point you have to realize it is not practical to do this with any footage that you care about capturing. I enjoyed the video and it was very informative.

@@Ummmmgood Hi, I don’t think he meant the general process of shooting and grading RAW footage on the whole..but more the limitations this ‘Hack’ illustrates. Rather to purchase a camera dedicated and fully designed to shoot RAW eg BMPCC 4k as opposed to a backdoor open source access with risky limitations that someone will not take to a paying job. The reality is these cameras were not designed to do what the ML is making the camera do, however, I will concede that ML is an awesome breakthrough to open up the cameras to more potential, but only the stable parts of the specs.. Hope this clears his comment a little.

I just installed ML on my 70D. i can only record up to 8 secs if set on 1600x900p at 16:9 ratio, but 24 secs at 2:35 ratio. How do i fix this to record longer?

yes I lower the resolution it lets me record over 1 min. since i rarely need to record a clip over 1 min, i stopped and don't know how much long it would record. i heard from some people that there is no time limit.

Kent Klein - Thanks! I'm not sure as I have never worked with Resolve. I'm pretty sure you would still need to convert to cDNG using a separate program, but whether Resolve allows you to drop in the DNG files directly, I am not sure about that.

Jhay-M Productions I believe the max write speed on the 70D is fairly low and I was recording RAW with 45 mb/s card initially. If you have a 45, just try that and see how much time you can record on the various resolution and if they match mine, then that is all you need. If not, you can upgrade the card and just reinstall ML on the new card.

+Boris Karloff It's not about the card size (I've used 32GB for RAW video before). It's about the card's speed + the speed the camera can write data to the card. RAW video (in 720p) eats up 25-30MB/s. For a card to record continuously (longer than 6 seconds), you would need a card that writes at 30MB/s or faster. Something like a 300x (or higher) Lexar or a 45MB/s (or faster) SanDisk should work for that resolution. Hope this helps. :-D

I installed ML on my PNY elite performance 32GB 95mb/s SD card for my 70d however I cant find a single place where someone explains the proper settings to run RAW video continuously. I turn on raw video and set it to 1280 - 720 but my fps in live view shows 29.956 and I only can get 8 seconds of video. I tried FPS override and it caused some really odd jittering and a pink screen, in fear of breaking my camera I've altogether stopped playing with that setting. I've seen people posting videos recording for much longer with ML RAW on the 70d and cant figure out how they're doing it. I've spent hours looking through forums, watching videos and have no luck on figuring out how to properly set this up. Can someone please make a video or point my in the right direction?

Kevin Lanuk Strange because when I set it to 720p it recorded over a minute for me (I just shut it off as it was just a test). I was recording at 23.98 fps though. Maybe try that? I would think you would get more than 8 seconds with 720p at 30 fps so not sure why that is happening. Maybe turn off every other setting in ML and just enable RAW at 720p so we can isolate the variable.

I'll try it out and let you know what happens. A few things I should mention: When I installed the most recent build of ML yesterday I noticed I did so on AV instead of M, could that have affected installation? Are there certain settings outside of the ML menu I should have turned on or off? When I shoot in 720p the lens is cropped and is smaller in live view, is this normal? Do I have to shoot in M? Is there a reset for ML settings? I can't seem to find one.

Janissary m That would be nice but unfortunately I'm not sure that will happen as I think it is almost a hardware issue (most likely intentionally to protect the higher end cameras that have faster write speeds). I have been eyeing used 5Dmkii on Ebay (cheaper than the 70D) so I can shoot in 1080p RAW because the image is so nice.

I wasn't even using my 70D (since I have an a7s) so I was more than willing to take the risk and install ML which has made me want to use my 70D more. I installed ML on my 70D during the first build during the alpha stage and I have used it many times and have had no issues at all.

aw... fuggedaboudit. what's the point of using magic lantern if can't achieve 1080p for realistic spans of shoot time? Now I understand why all the ML footage out there is comprised of 5-7 second shots... because that's the limit. I used to belly ache over the 30 minute DSLR cutoff point, but 5-7 seconds for less than HD is definitely a deal breaker. Now considering Black Magic... and keeping my EF lenses! (thanks for the review as it has been a real eye-opener).

um you should know that RAW doesn't need another process before using on cameras that shoot raw VIDEO rather than a series of images or raw images. RAW in general doesn't behave like he is describing on other cameras that shoot raw formats INTENDED for raw video. Here raw is like negatives, photo negatives. Cameras that are for video and film production shoot raw already ready to drop on a Preimier timline. That is the one thing i find annoying coming from other cameras that shoot UNCOMPRESSED video already in a container meant for editing in a video app. Just saying its not a general rule like he makes is sound that raw need to be processed before putting into premiere, thats only true of these hacked canons that aren't meant to shoot raw video, and yes a number of cameras, but it makes it so it shoots raw single images as you would a bunch of single photos NOT in a ready to use container for video workflows. What you see here is raw images, like taking a single raw photograph. a lot if not most professional cameras shoot raw in a video container you can simply drop in premiere. Yes the file is HUGE but its ready to edit uncompressed video, which handles like dropping any video on your timeline basically. Some cameras do shoot a series of single image, raw photographs but its not a general rule. And furthermore, some workflows import that very series of images as a video in your timeline with no step in between. direct from simply choosing the folder or highlighting the series of single images, imports into video on your timeline. In particular PREMIERE Pro CAN DO THIS!! even tho he says it can't. I know cause i do it all the damn time and work in the in the industry for 8yrs now. I highlight a series of images and go directly to premiere and it makes a video on my timeline importing through the menus. With almost any popular raw camera i can think of, most are uncompressed video, like raw images, but ready to use and simply import the "video file" tho its not your typical video file. I get that the hack is a workaround making a photo camera behave like a film raw uncompressed camera but not all raw cameras do this. Most are uncompressed video or you import the native series of images no need to convert.

Are you absolutely sure 8-bit colour means 8-bit in total (256 colours)? I find that hard to believe. In fact I don't believe it. We'd have shocking banding in every sky, etc. Many programs, including Photoshop, refer to 24-bit colour as 8-bit, meaning 8-bits "per channel". This is 16.7m colours. Photoshop says 16-bit which means 16-bits per channel which scanners refer to as 48-bit colour. I am going to look into this because I think you may be wrong. I'm a photographer so I'm fully aware of colour, but I'm new to video. These cameras are not producing 256 colour still images, so why would they do so with video?

But for now, I can get 20 second takes on the 70D at 1504 pixels wide. Def. usable for product or food promos.

+Tim Knox that would be awesome. I know ML reaches out to support new Canon DSLRs. I think they are even working with an open source startup for open cinema cam architecture (read from their Facebook if I'm not mistaken). Regarding full frame DSLRs, the only thing that bothers me is rolling shutter jello effect, worse on full frame, horrible on Sony A7S. have you had much success with post plugin that nulls the wobble? I know premiere pro has one but I've never used it.

+Smart Biz Web Media I know a lot of people have issues with rolling shutter, but to be honest, I don't really have that much of an issue with it. Depends on what you shoot, I suppose, and if you are using stabilizers to limit that etc. Global shutter would be great, but I don't see that coming to small-form-factor cameras anytime soon. What's great about the A7s is the ability to change to APS-C on the fly, would be great if Canon had that feature as well.
