I haven't seen a pilot worry about their hair so much before, maybe that was the distraction from the canopy.

I think the fact that he has the inside of his watch polished to he can keep checking how he looks for the camera was more disturbing than him checking the canopy and all of the constant figiting that he dose.

For pilots, especially when doing aerobatics with +8/-7 G, oxygen is xetremly importent. A booger could mean like 8% less oxygen, wich is already a risk.

It would be fantastic to be able to do it, but it would take an enormous of natural ability, practice, money and hard work to get to that level. Bravo!! Was he a touch hot on the landing?

The aircraft he flies stalls at 80 kts, his mms is 220 kts so if that canopy comes of his stall speed rises so he has to fly at around 110 kts just to stay airborn and with no canopy that hurts.

@PhotoAvia
@PhotoAvia 10 жыл бұрын
The inflight canopy check is a reflex that some aerobatic glider pilots have. It's a different feeling in flight when air is flowing around it, you can check for play , sealing etc.. . It's better to check it 100 times on the ground and in flight than checking it only once to look good to the youtube watchers :P

Graham it REALLY is a lot of fun to fly sailplanes. I learned to do it. You can too!! Just go to a glider port and take a ride in a twin seater. The view is spectacular. No noise ...just the wind coming through the vent. They normally let you fly it a bit the first time you go up!!

Flying with no canopy is absolute hell, whatever speed you are flying at!! But, the Swift S1 does not stall at 80kts, its more like 40kts -/+, his Va is more like 123kts, even if his canopy does come off he wouldnt have to fly any faster than 50kts just to say airbourne :P There are many vintage open cockpit gliders can fly at 50kts or more. But you certainly wouldn't have to be flying at 110kts just to stay airbourne with an open/missing canopy! Whichever way, this is an awesome video! great!:D

This is a simple situation of changing a routine that has been done hundreds of times and then everything after that being questioned. You can see it from the start, Smiling, laughing then being distracted by a camera and then the rest is history. Routine, routine, routine..... oh by the way should the red leaver at his right move by itself? Seen at 18.10, 19.00 and 19.25.min. I think he has amazing skills but this video is such a great demonstration of how one simple distraction at the start of a routine changes everything else. His body language was agitated and fearful, self doubting and scared.

I believe the red handles are used to jettison the canopy. The red arrows on the canopy denote the direction to push both of them in an emergency to get out fast. The other latches are not that big of a deal because the air holds pressure on the clam shell. It won't open that direction in flight. You don't want it coming off in flight because it may strike the tail. It was rattling and most of them do rattle a little when the air gets bouncing off of it up there and the rubber seal gets worn out.

Can someone explain to me what happened? I see all these comments about the canopy but for the life of me don't understand what is going on. Did he not lock it down right? At 16:25 he makes sure the canopy is held down right. Is the fact he had that little window open the big issue? I am unsure.
@ianharris2370
@ianharris2370 9 жыл бұрын
Timothy Lieuw I noticed when watching it initially that he got so distracted setting up the camera that he forgot to latch the canopy before the takeoff roll started. He realized it when they were already underway, and frantically tried latching it (dangerous move). He got it somewhat latched, but it looked to me like the latch handles weren't all the way home. He was clearly aware of this, and thus all the checking. The little window in the cockpit is just a vent to provide airflow-that's not the problem. Frankly, I would have aborted the flight.
@EggiTheShadow
@EggiTheShadow 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah but its highly likely it wont drop out of the sky if the canopy comes off, also he's securely strapped in, so i really don't see what the big problem is. they used to do aerobatics with open cockpit planes. Unless the hazard is that the canopy flies off and hits a wing or incapacitates him or causes damage to the glider

And what happens if the glass accidentally opens
@wangfury
@wangfury 11 жыл бұрын
Wow, a classic case where a flight should have been aborted! He was so rattled by forgetting to latch the canopy, that in the first 7 minutes, he looks at or touches the canopy levers and canopy 31 times! Pushed on the canopy 14 times, even 16 minutes into the video. Should have landed and cleared his head of the doubt. Aerobatic flight went OK, but he never believed that the canopy was secured. Not retracting the gear until 6 minutes into the flight may be a sign of distraction, ???

You have control of the stick and if you feel like you are going out you can relax tension on the stick. People that take rides with the Blue Angels pass out all the time because they don't have control of the stick. There are breathing excercises that help and you just get used to it the more you do it.
