It's fun watching someone else rawhide backing. I always use hide glue, and soak my strips in a thinned hide glue mixture so it's almost like sticking it to the bow like using a contact cement. But I'm in a drier climate than you and don't have as much of an issue with humidity. Thank you for posting this.

Have you ever thought about using a tanned Salmon skin? Your bows are the real deal, and your attention to detail in all your videos is exhaustive and finite! Thankyou for all the hours you put in, as I certain have enjoyed hours of learning, and as a bushcraft instructor and a happy knapper, I'm learning whenever I watch your work. Thankyou Ryan.

Thank you, that was a great video. I’ve only ever done one rawhide back myself, and I used ace bandage and everything worked out. I’m in the middle of a Osage bow right now and I think I’m gonna order some rawhide from you and follow your techniques. Thank you again

Ha tightbond! You know those rawhide chips you buy in bulk at WinCo? That's what I use. I've built 2 cinew/ (ostrich) rawhide backed juniper. I cherry pick through and select the thin ones. It's usually about 14 prices stacked together gives a scale appearance. I use hide glue. And for this most recent bow I'm gonna use chucker, Hungarian partridge, Columbian sharptail, sage grouse and some rattle snake hides to go over the rawhide. I call it the desert queen!

I used a large dog chew toy to back a red elm bow I made years ago. I just soaked the chew toy in water and it softened up after a week or so. I applied it with unflavored gelatin. I mixed it really thick, like paint and used a brush to apply it. Then I clamped the whole assembly to a metal bed rail and put it in the shed for a few weeks, in August. That rawhide was tough stuff.

I know, it's a year old video, but maybe someone is reading this. I made my first locust flat-/longbow and made it accidentally to weak (around 10 pounds...). Can I use a rawhide backing to bring some poundage back to the bow? Thanks. Thank you for the video, with the good explanation, how to make a backing.

Rawhide will add a little weight but not very much especially on that weight bow. Maybe one or two pounds.

Ryan, I can't for the life of me find any video from you on backing with sinew. In fact, it seems that you only support the use of sinew for making bowstrings. That is a surprise and I would love your reasons/experience for this omission. I'm about to take an old Ben Pearson Hickory bow that is too heavy for me and sinew backing it before I remove what I need to remove to get the weight down to where I can use it. I do know that it is a well tillered and good shooting bow as I have shot it for several years, it's just that I need to reduce the weight. Thanks
@huntprimitive99184 жыл бұрын
Sinew is such a valuable resource to me, and I personally don't seen any need to back a bow with sinew personally unless trying to build a small composite to get a little more performance to shoot bison. I also don't live in a climate that will really benefit from a sinew backing. here in florida, I get pretty much the same performance between rawhide and sinew backing.
@charlesedenfield89474 жыл бұрын
@@huntprimitive9918 Thanks, I live in Texas and far enough away from the coast to have humidity in the "normal" range. Also, I don't see myself shooting the bow all that frequently and not for hunting. More of an "practice, experiment" type of thing. What you say makes sense for Florida. Thanks again.

I clean up the flesh side with a drum sander when the rawhide is dry. That works very well. I cheat with power tools to minimize hand work. My shoulders are not much good. Both rotator repaired. Both bad again. Should have taken care of them.

I just use an Ace Bandage,....they are flawless. Raw hide verse's fiberglass? Have you ever went through a thicket of green briars and berry bush's then your goochi fiberglass bow is all scratched up,.......well that's exactly why raw hide is better. I buy very large dog bones and toss them in the tub and unravel them to get my raw hide at Big-Lots or Ollies or some over stock store they are shaped like a candy cane or a dog bone. And if I can't find any reasonably priced dog bones,......I just use dry wall tape. But lately I have seen sinew at Rural King called Dog chews,.... cows tendons. I use gorilla glue or Titebond. Pine Hollow Long bows also sells supplies as well.

I have a question: Instead of using animal glue or industrial glue, can homemade pine pitch be used to back a bow?
@huntprimitive99184 жыл бұрын
pine pitch isn't strong enough to bind a backing to a bow. I think you would be constantly be fighting delaminations as it gets soft in warm weather and hard/brittle in cold weather

You were talking about chasing a ring. I am sinew backing a piece of osage i cut in texas 3 yrs ago . the rings were insane. Thin. Then thick . i could not do it .... So im sinew backing it . it bounces back and forth between 3 rings. Im just wondering what chance do i have of it blowing up on me? (2 layers of white tail leg tendon sinew. With knox for glue ) its kinda short ... Theres a vid of it on my channel . (my most recent vid ) any thoughts would be greatly appreciated !

Hide glue or animal glue. Boiled and rendered bits of horn, skin, hooves, and tendon, to extract the natural glues within. It's however water soluble so special care needs to be taken to keep it dry
