Interesting... Jersey cows, they make the best riatas from any currently available cattle. Honestly, elk hide is better although a little harder to work. After your braiding is finishing, it's to your advantage to pull the riata through a plank of cedar. Drill 3 holes, maybe 5/8 - 3/4 of an inch each, spaced maybe 10 inches apart. Drag the riata through the holes 4 or 5 times, end to end. It will help settle the plats. It's good to see this knowledge being shared. And yes, I am 9th generation Californio. My family started Salinas, a little bit south of where you are.

That's what I have heard too, Jerseys seem to be harder to find around this area though. Not sure if you've ever used criollo, those are the spanish cattle, thin and tough skinned - supposed to be the best, though they may not beat an elk hide. Great advice, we are prepping a video soon to demonstrate the idea of stretching and soothing out our riatas. Thank you, it has been a good journey for me. @@california_traditionspardon for intruding on a conversation that is not mine but I can help translate this. The tientos that she is talking about are called saddle strings and/or rope strap. The saddles have several of these there is one pair of these tientos that are in the front left which are the two straps used to tied the lead rope. There are other tientos on the opposite side (right front) which are used to hold/Carry the riata. There are some other ones behind the cantle on the back jockey area. These tiernos are called: tientos saraperos which as it names states are the tientos (strap/leather string) to trie the Sarape that the Mexican vaquero and charro Carries on the saddle.
