For leather, it goes to Rawlings for sure. For shape, I got to give it to Wilson. You can shape Wilson however you want and I love that about their gloves. My winner is Wilson but you can't go wrong with either brand. They both make gloves that are just tanks and if handled right, they will last a long time

I wouldn’t turn down either, but I prefer Rawlings. I suppose if you want the lightest glove, Wilson would be your preference. It just seems to me that Rawlings is a little less flimsy, protects the hand better, and lasts longer…I think the big comparison is primo mizuno vs Wilson. Very similar in fit (a bit tighter) and weight

Correction, steerhide leather is not thinner, Wilson cuts the leather thinner, kip leather is thinner but since Wilson cuts their leather so thin and Rawlings just keeps the kip leather how it is, that why the Wilson feels thinner.

Doesn’t that make Wilson cheaper and less durable for more money when it comes to custom gloves compared to Rawlings.

Lol. You don’t “cut” leather thinner. It comes as is from the cow or calf. Wilson A2K leather is thinner, no imperfections for the most part and tougher because it comes from a much younger animal. Rawlings leather comes form older steers and is therefore thicker, but wears in faster and is more imperfect. Heavier as well which isn’t good for infielders especially. They just don’t hold their shape nearly as long either. Cool story though bud!

@@TheDoozie43 I do leather crafting as a hobby and you are absolutely incorrect. Leather hides are thinned, split or trimmed to get desired thicknesses and consistent or desired appearances. research full grain vs top grain leather. To achieve desired thicknesses or weight which is measured in oz's hides are split or cut to various thicknesses. A full grain piece of leather can still be split on the back side or flesh side, full grain just means the top skin layer hasnt been corrected at all. Why top grain leather? well animals live outside, rub up against fences, get bitten by bugs, fight with others in their herd, and roll around on the ground to scratch their backs, skin stretches resulting in fat lines/creases. When leather gets processed and the hair is removed, all evidence of an easy or rough life shows up as scars, scrapes, and general imperfections. Which, affect the quality grade of a hide. Kipskin leather is not calfskin (infant cow) leather as many like to say, thats a common misnomer i see/hear all the time. Kipskin leather is defined as - The leather of a cattle in the age between calf and grown cow is called “kipskin”. The quality of such leather is between the finer calfskin and the coarser cowhide. The highest quality leather is full grain leather. If the hide is a blemish-free hide, the very best way to use the leather is full grain. Full-grain leather simply means that the hair is removed and the hide goes immediately into the tanning process. "The leather has not been sanded or buffed to remove any marks." The entire thickness of the "skin" is used. but the flesh side of the hide may still be cut to achieve a desired leather weight. The second-highest-quality leather is top-grain leather. This leather is the most used leather throughout the industry from handbags, furniture, clothing etc, etc top grain is used where a pristine look is desired. "The leather is named top grain because the very top layer is sanded, buffed or shaved off." Shaving off the top layer can also be referred to as splitting leather. There are many reasons to split the leather. One being to start with a fresh top surface for a variety of finishes to be applied like the pebbled/tumble grain leathers and dimpled leathers seen on basketballs and footballs or just a clean and smooth finish. Another is to make the leather thinner and more workable for certain applications. The stamping of textures and faux finishes of alligator, snake, and ostrich are often applied to cow hides prepared as top grain. This can also be considered “corrected-grain” leather. Top-grain leather is still appropriate for luxury goods. Now when it comes to gloves rawlings uses full grain leather for sure this is literally the supplier i order leather from and he happens to get Rawlings hides from time to time kzbin.info/www/bejne/mH2ugodugcd-aMk kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqvMYaxvoNl9mtU kzbin.info/www/bejne/n5TJZpyrf9hgnbc kzbin.info/www/bejne/bIq4ZIx4rJZghqs Id assume most brands pro grade gloves are full grain as well and if not then there top grain. if you look at those videos youll see how much the imperfections vary from hide to hide also note the various 0z weight ratings of the hides... which again in leather terms equates to thickness... of course rawlings makes a ton of leather goods outside of just baseball gloves but that will give you an idea of what the leather hides that rawlings uses are like.
