Wow. They put any cheesey-sounding keyboard in front of Ray and he plays it, like a good sport… When he did “What’d I Say”, he regarded the Wurlitzer Electric piano as a toy, but it’s one that sounds nothing like a toy when a virtuoso sits down in front of one. Eons ago, when Brad Rabuchin had more hair than Jesus, I was learning how to run rock and roll bands and had an eight-piece bunch that I depended on to play well because of my Svengali-like control.., 🙄🙄😂🤪 We were all very young and the guy actually got some money together to finance his Halloween Party. A whopping fifty bucks. We played about four hours, counting undisciplined socializing and people having to have their attention focused upon the job at hand… At the end of the night I proudly handed Brad his six bucks. He played guitar and sax then, making him sort of an MVP. Okay, he should have gotten seven bucks, I guess…I used to have some recordings, one, an original song of mine, and the other a simplistic cover, ala The Stones, of Route 66, at a party in the San Fernando Valley… our general stomping grounds… Nice to see him forging on into the future… He told me that Ray Charles had gotten into the habit of carrying a flask of gin in his pocket in HIS salad days, because a lot of times, in the South and elsewhere, that potable water was unavailable in road houses, so down the hatch with the gin. A habit that probably shortened his life span…
