That's the way to play relaxed blues tunes, with the famous, sparse Yancey bass line, leaving room and focus for right hand action! These clustered chord moves of "Roadhouse" are intriguing: so rich and dissonant on purpose. By varying their rhythm one can tinker with them for hours. I discovered this clip while searching for more of Ray Charles piano solo/vcl tunes, after hearing his dramatic vocal 'Worried Life Blues' the way Big Maceo had originally set it up. Apparently Ray did not record a lot in this minimalistic solo instrument way, sadly. Of all the music on this planet I always felt that Blues piano is about the most authentic, down to earth, the most honest music one can find. Especially if played 'off the wrist', extemporaneous, talking with one's fingers. Jimmy Yancey literally spoke through his hands, he mesmerized me as a youngster, showed that "little is more". Impressive and overladen arrangements will never have the depth of such melancholic solo pieces as played by the early Blues pianists almost 100 years ago. Montana Taylor, Henry Brown come to mind, contemporaries of Yancey, less spectacular and furious than the big three Ammons, Lewis and Johnson, but at least as influencial for generations to come. Even young Ray Charles learned from these early black artists! This is GOOD MUSIC - thanks for showing!

@@RobertVanSoloPiano Thanks for your reply and link to your other clips! I like your clear, straight-forward and pleasant style, in the footsteps of the old barrelhouse and speak-easy players. Yancey hung out at the 'Beartrap' in Chicago's eastside for decades, doing his thing. More for fun than for dough. That's the proper attitude to play one's guts out! My former friend Erwin Helfer is quite similar to Yancey in many aspects; as modest, quiet and secluded. And AFAIK he is still playing the bars of the 'windy city' today. What you do NOT know: several years ago I did EXACTLY the same as you: recording my own renditions of popular and less known Blues'n'Boogie piano solo tunes of various famous pianists from Ammons-Zwingenberger, from the very same top-view cam perspective. Actually I did turn the lens by 90 degrees so viewers would see the keyboard from a horizontal view, a little easier to follow. In total I had about 12-15 of these clips online here at YT, with a neat resonance by the few viewers (it is a niche market after all, no modern "rap crap"..). Later I decided to pull all my videos from YT, as I do not consent with the Google monopoly and influence on this platform. If interested in communicating with me (an autistic German) outside of this platform, you can contact me privately. It is nice to know that the traditional blues and boogie piano is kept alive to these days. In fact it seems to gain popularity again, due to the social media and many new active players around the globe. When I started my interest in this music, in the early 1970s, the 'scene' was miniscule, only a dozen good players left. We all learned from old 78rpm records, using slowed-down tape recorders to pick up riffs and licks, the good old times...

Hello Sir, Great 12 Bar Basic blues tutorials. What is the Chord progressions done on the right hand at 1:34 through to 1:58. Just on the right hand, it seems like a fun progression but I dont know where to look to learn it, If you could tell me or point me in the direction of a place that shares this info about that little part on the right hand that would be great, Thanks!
