Ray Charles not only played piano but he also taught himself to play the organ, alto saxophone, clarinet and trumpet. Frank Sinatra was absolutely right when he said “Ray Charles is the only true genius in our business.”

Don 't shed a tear for Ray . He is swinging in heaven with Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Jaco Pastorius , Ray Barreto, Miles Davis, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller and Satchmo Louis Armstrong and the rest of that heavenly orchestra. Keep on swinging in heaven Ray - you and your music will never die.

well considering first, how great of a singer he was, that might explain the incredible breath control, but also his insane understanding of how to musically emote was second to none IMO.

He was great no doubt. But in a world where Charlie Parker, Clifford Brown and a host of other jazz musicians existed, that's a huge exaggeration.

Around 1958, he was presented an award from a french Jazz magazine as a "new star in jazz", despite the fact that he had been recording since 1950. If you ever get a chance, find the following albums Soul Meeting, Soul Brothers(Both with Milt Jackson)both which display some amazing jazz chops. Also, I have the album "Ray Charles In Person" the cover of which shows him with a saxophone, from 1959 i believe..

Some Has to be mentally challenged to say Ray had no talent at sax!! Ofcourse BIrd is one of his influences. But this solo is all Ray.The sequential motif he plays at 1:47 is a straight Ray Charles blues moment. Bird would never have played that. The man was so gifted that he could have easily had a career solely being a sax player. I challenge anyone to find a Bird recording that mirrors this. This is all RAY!! RIP SIR. -JAMEEL

i had known for years he played other instruments but i didnt realize what a master he was really was on the sax.... but his main instrument is piano because of course its hard to sing and play sax lol, but yes whilei knew he had played and had expierence with sax anda few other instruments, i neer knew til years later he was so skilled, incredibly skilled with it

First of all I want you to read Quincy Jones' autobiography. Jones is perhaps one of the greatest musical minds of our time and even he professes Ray to have outrageous talent on sax and piano. I am a sax player on the New York jazz scene I know talent when I hear it. You said you could post a solo of you playing better than that. I want to hear it. Post away!
