Ray Charles not only played piano but he also taught himself to play the organ, alto saxophone, clarinet and trumpet. Frank Sinatra was absolutely right when he said “Ray Charles is the only true genius in our business.”

Don 't shed a tear for Ray . He is swinging in heaven with Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Jaco Pastorius , Ray Barreto, Miles Davis, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller and Satchmo Louis Armstrong and the rest of that heavenly orchestra. Keep on swinging in heaven Ray - you and your music will never die.

Around 1958, he was presented an award from a french Jazz magazine as a "new star in jazz", despite the fact that he had been recording since 1950. If you ever get a chance, find the following albums Soul Meeting, Soul Brothers(Both with Milt Jackson)both which display some amazing jazz chops. Also, I have the album "Ray Charles In Person" the cover of which shows him with a saxophone, from 1959 i believe..

(“Ray Charles, Presents David Fathead Newman” ,continued)... First, the album starts with a Magnificent Jazz rendition of “Hard Times”, played by David Newman on lead Alto Sax & Ray on Piano. Then the album drifts away into a heartfelt weep of melancholy, with David Newman’s beautiful rendition of “Willow Weep for Me”…

Some Has to be mentally challenged to say Ray had no talent at sax!! Ofcourse BIrd is one of his influences. But this solo is all Ray.The sequential motif he plays at 1:47 is a straight Ray Charles blues moment. Bird would never have played that. The man was so gifted that he could have easily had a career solely being a sax player. I challenge anyone to find a Bird recording that mirrors this. This is all RAY!! RIP SIR. -JAMEEL

First of all I want you to read Quincy Jones' autobiography. Jones is perhaps one of the greatest musical minds of our time and even he professes Ray to have outrageous talent on sax and piano. I am a sax player on the New York jazz scene I know talent when I hear it. You said you could post a solo of you playing better than that. I want to hear it. Post away!

There's a cut titled HOW LONG BLUES where Ray plays his heart out and hits one note that's bound to send a chill thru your soul and up your spine. Find it soon, for medicinal purposes late one night when you think all is lost, Then lemme know.
