This song was composed in under 15 minutes while he was improvising with his orchestra and backup singers at a live show in Pittsburg in 1958. The audience reacted with such enthusiasm that Charles decided to record it. B.t.w. the best song all over the world!!!

Like the Stones, the Beatles were individually and collectively all 100 rooted in early '50s American blues greats...Paul fell in love with Elvis when he was sick in bed, George embraced Fats Domino, John drew upon Chuck Berry and the Everly Bros. And Ringo loved Lightning Hopkins. Of course, Ray Charles was a powerful influence too!

Paul McCarney said when they heard Ringo playing this drum part, they knew he was real good. Not many drummers could do it.

I remember when 'Whad I Say' was played in clubs and it could go on for 45 minutes rolling into, "see the girl dressed in red" and then black, and every other color possible. I always loved the perfect blend with the Rayletts chorus in the background.

The definitive Ray Charles song. I remember back in 1972 when I was 15 working at a skating rink and the owner, (the infamous Carl Clark, Idabel, Oklahoma, former B17 pilot) was always playing Ray Charles. Such a good skate two-stepping song. Ray, you was always rocking the rink!

Man, I'm a white 43 year old guy and the first time I hear this song I was about 7 on the jukebox at a restaurant and I kept playing it over and over!! When I got older I started getting what this jam is all about, and there may not be a sexier song ever made lol! It's addictive! I mean, you feel like a million bucks when you hear it. I can imagine ol Ray and his band playing this in nightclubs for hours and the crowd begging him to keep it going!
