At a young age I had the privilege of learning under Mr Kane while he teached with the parks and recreation in Nanakuli...wonderful person with lots of Aloha....those were good times for me...I had him all to myself during the summers. Thanks for the memories. Curt

I was so very fortunate to have Raymond as my first slack key teacher (I his last student). He was the real thing. Just listen to that soulful, unhurried, totally unique style of playing and singing. He was the first, or at least among the first, to share kiho'alu with students regardless of race or nationality. He didn't care, just wanted it to live on. True aloha is rare among people of his caliber.

Yes indeed! I was his last student and though he was in decline, I learned a lot. I was privileged to also perform with him his last appearance on stage.

@dougfitch3649 that's amazing! Do you have footage of that? I would love to see it. I just discovered him a couple days ago and watched some interviews, he's such a special soul. I absolutely love watching him play. So much heart in his presence and music 🥰 what an amazing gift for you to have known him and performed with him the last show.

@@Aquarosegarden Yes you're right, quite a privilege. I don't think there is any other footage but there are other performances on video on the internet. Are I a musician interested in playing his music?

@dougfitch3649 yes I just started learning Ki ho'alu a couple weeks ago so I'm just getting the basics down now. But he's my favourite I've seen. His hands move so gracefully. I would love to play like him. Do you teach ?

Why can't we have singers like Raymond Kane, Gabby Pahinui, and Israel Kamakawiwo'ole they were the best of the best! We need to bring music like back into the hawaiian music and bring happiness back to Hawaii.

We lost a great talent and alot of aloha when Ray crossed over. A shame all those years he had to work hard labor instead of just making beautiful music.

By "hard labor" I mean his years working as a welder, not as any kind of crime and punishment. The shame is there are so precious few recordings from his prime of life.

The Navy ships and other stuff at Pearl Harbor had plenty asbestos which led to his mesothelioma. In Wa'ahila album, you can hear Raymond's labored breathing as he was recorded on oxygen in the living room in Nanakuli (by George Winston who rushed there to record him, fearing there would be no more opportunities to record Raymond.

can anyone tell me the tuning on this particular song.. DGddgd or DGddgd or perhaps the Taro tuning I believe Ray was credited with the Mauna Loa Style

I’m sure you’ve found out by now, it’s been 9 years and I just seen this comment, in case you haven’t, it’s drop C.. So it’s taro patch but the first D is dropped 2 notes to a C. :) you can figure the rest from watching his fingers and how it sounds and trying for yourself, it comes after a bit !

@@rickelliott6946 Of course !! Haha, I had stumbled across this video because I’ve been searching for more clips of the masters like uncle Raymond and Gabby.. By the way, I’m sure you know this tuning, but in case you don’t, I figured out the one Gabby used for Hi‘ilawe in many of his more recent 1970’s versions.. I noticed they also use it in The Yellow Gabby Pahinui Hawaiian Band Vol. 1 & Waimea Music Festival LP’s. It’s C Maunaloa, ( C G E G A E ). Able to hit all those notes that you hear in the Hi‘ilawe recordings.. I know there was one where he used ( C G E G B E ), the A stepped up to a B.. but it doesn’t get those high vamp notes as you slide down the neck like you’ll hear in many of his recordings. Hope this helped somewhat, continue on, with greatest regards, mahalo !

Where did Raymond Kane get his songs. Does he speak in the old language?
@simmo303
@simmo303 6 жыл бұрын
Yes he did. He got into trouble at home when he spoke English and at school when he spoke Hawaiian. Some songs he composed, some he learned. He traded fish for lessons when young.
