Its actually very handy to bring a small diamond/ ceramic sharpener into the wild with you. No different than bringing a lighter or matches for a fire, it serves its purpose well.
@CanItAlready11 жыл бұрын
The advice is often to lay the knife flat on the stone, then raise the spine as you move the blade forward until the edge starts to bit into the stone, and then lower the spine just a bit and try to hold that angle. Some people also color the edge bevel with a sharpie marker so that they can see if they're getting the right angle.

Hello and many thanks, dear Mr.Mear! I appreciate your valuable advises as well as your unexplicable funny British accent! I am going to get all of your movies on Survival/bushcraft. Kindest regards from Siberia! Smooth trails and good hunting out there! Peace out, Pavel.

Be aware, that the diamond side of this stone will wear out after only about five or six sessions, and be left basically useless afterwards because the diamond abrasive has been worn away. The new Fallkniven "CC4" stone is much more successful, durable, longer lasting; as it has a double ceramic working area, one medium side, and one fine.

That's true even with a Scandi grind knife, although in that case you usually end up with a convex edge which works great too.

Just got this stone today the fallkniven dc4 to use with the fallkniven f1 knife and it works very well im very happy with the stone was going to get the japanese water stones but as i only have two knives to sharpen when im out in the woods i didnt see the point in paying to much and the dc4 cost me £13.95 and i can carry it around with my mini strop was only use to a old oilstone before but the dc4 is well worth getting my other knife is a old buck knife with a 3" blade its sharper now :)

So much hate for Ray on here, and everyone seems to know better. Ray may now be a tv personality making money, but long before this he was just joe schmoe going into the woods and getting firsthand experience. The knife sharpening he shows here isn't what is optimal, it's what you can when you're in the bush to give your knife that extra edge (pun intended). This technique will work just fine. Of course there are better ways.

...not a genius here...but if you were to bring...2 MORE small nails, you'd have 4....making sure the sharpening stone doesn't go anywhere....not a genius and all but just pointing that out, seems little weird you'd bring nails and not just bring enough to make it not move at all.
@recycled36546 жыл бұрын
The nail thing may not be necessary if his knife was scandi. You can practically sharpen them in the dark like around campfire light.

It's not much of a help for sharpening a really dull blade, but the Birch Bracket fungus can be dried (leave it for about two weeks or heat over a fire gently to dry it out) and used to strop a blade to a fine standard. As for getting it to the point where it can be stropped to begin with, I would hazard a guess maybe using fine silt or sand from the bottom of a river? There are also smooth rocks in rivers that seem similar to the texture of a whetstone. Perhaps something like a sheet of slate?

It's sort of a way of life. It's the challenge of it. It's useful to know the stuff, even if there are modern conveniences. It's an art form. Some people enjoy working on cars, even though they could bring it into a shop. Some people enjoy creating fire out of nothing, even though they could use a fire. It's a lot of fun.

@jamescooper26189 жыл бұрын
The real secret is common sense. Don't let your knife get dull. You should be polishing the edge often. You should only need the fine grit side, and it goes quicker than a full sharpening too. All knives need to be real sharp at all times.
@TheWoomax9 жыл бұрын
James Cooper If you have enough time to hone your edge often enough to keep it razor sharp, it simply means that you're playing with your toy-knife rather than working with it ! :D

I was a huge fan for years until I found out in his book about his involvement in the hunt for the killer Moat. He used a personal contact and his status as a public figure to invite himself onto the police unit tasked with finding, posing for a photograph in combat gear. Thankfully they came to their senses and sidelined him, he even joked that he should have a gun as he was a licensed hunter. Not his finest hour.

Fallkniven ceramic/synthetic sapphire stones are good.The only difference is one stone is larger than the other.Can and should be used dry.But to touch up a knife I have stones I have used for years,Washita stones,silicon carbide,oilstones,all will produce you an edge used right.Contrary to what many would have you believe,sharpening tools is not a science,or an art,just a practice making perfect exercise.

@krystofdavid111710 жыл бұрын
The grey one.
@daverave9995 жыл бұрын
The brown side is finer; that's the ceramic side. The grey side is the diamond, which is for more rapid removal i.e. it is coarser.
@TzunSu12 жыл бұрын
Almost the same in Sweden. You have to have a reason to use it, or have it stored so that you cannot easily have access to it. At the bottom of your backpack while hiking = Fine. On your leg in the shop = Not ok.

It's not necessary to carry the nails like that, you can use the knife to cut out a rectangle shape in the log and place the sharpening stone in the rectangle groove. The stone will not move this way.

I'm not sure, but it looks like a knife from Finland, or maybe Norway. I don't know, but it's not one of his own brand knives. Try Helle of Norway or Brusletto of Norway - maybe you have some luck there. It could be a finnish brand also. I don't know, but to me it looks like a Helle or Brusletto. It could be custom made. Good luck :-)
