Ray Mercer is an absolute legend for this. So many boxers talk shit about other fighting disciplines but don't have the balls to step into the ring/cage, but Ray is an animal and he took his chances.

@@mohammadmehmood3405 what are you even saying? Boxers are always talking down on mma when in reality they're just self concious because they know in a real fight they'd be in serious trouble. How many times you heard a boxer call wrestling "gay" or kicking "gay"? They're just self concious because they know how limited their fighting style is. I'd put my money on a high school wrestler beating up a pro adult boxer any day of the week. That's why I like Bud Crawford too because he can wrestle on top of being an elite boxer. Stop being so close minded and check out some other fighting styles boxing is just one aspect of an infinite combination of amazing fighting styles.

And please don’t bring up fat steroid abuser Tim Sylvia who became champ in the UFC during the worst heavyweight division of all time. It must be understood that Mercer was 43 years old in this match, 12 years older than Musashi, who was a K1 and Muay Thai champion. In all this, Mercer didn't check a single kick or even throw one, and he had his chances to close out the match despite the countless kicks he received. So boxing has excellent possibilities against kickboxing or muay thai disciplines

Perhaps he was a bit naive in that regard but in an interview he clearly expressed his surprise that Dana would not let the fight happen. I doubt that Anderson Silva issued the challenge for publicity. He didn't realize that Dana would play politics and prevent the fight from happening. He has announced that he will retire early and pursue this fight with Jones. I see no reason to doubt him. Mike Tyson would have defeated any kickboxer in history in k1 rules. Francois Botha beat a few top kickboxers, shannon briggs won a k1 match. Tyson would have put the fear of god in them.
@PronounceGaming7 жыл бұрын
Shannon Briggs opponent was Tom Erikson, a wrestler who happened to try kickboxing and whose final record was 1-4. Briggs said on Joe Rogan's podcast that he couldn't handle the leg kicks which is why he never fought in kickboxing again. Francois Botha was 4-13 in kickboxing; his win against Le Banner was due to forfeit, his win against Aerts was due to injury, he knocked out an unknown kickboxer by the name of Espedito Da Silva, and had a decision win over Kaoklai Kaennorsing (who was 85 lbs lighter than Botha). Botha got knocked out by Mighty Mo (20-21 record).
@lpoolfc48797 жыл бұрын
he could not handle the leg kicks because his legs have not been conditioned to handle them. even if botha';s wins against those guys were for this or that reason I have seen all his fights including the ones against bonjasky. He more than handled his own against the best kickboxers in the world. He arguably beat bonjasky. He got KOd once and against actual kickboxers. I've noticed kickboxing people are very touchy about the ease with which boxers (even at the club-fighter level) are able to handle kickboxers (including those at an elite level). It seems the insecurity of kickboxing fans--much as with MMA--is so intense it incentivises promoters to set up freak-show contests in which washed-up, shot-to-shit journeymen-type boxers (and, in the case of Riddick Bowe, neurodegenerative disease-afflicted) are offered a paycheck to take a beating from one of the promotion's superstars in a pitiful effort to gain the sport mainstream acceptance. I remember K-1 poster-boy Masato being fed a fair few scrub 'boxers' to beat up. Christ, back in the day Benny 'The Jet' was stalking Sugar Ray Leonard (of all people) desperate to get a fight and draw some attention to his sport--as if Leonard would lower himself to such a thing. Your comments caught my eye because of how stunningly, pathetically defensive they are, most obviously with respect to your dismissal of Botha's win over Le Banner as being 'due to forfeit'. I mean, really? Botha beat Le Banner up; Le Banner couldn't come out for the extra round, so Botha won. That's it. You make it sound as if it were a disqualification or somehow when one beats one's opponent until that opponent is no longer able (or willing) to continue, it doesn't count as a legitimate victory. Nonsense. It only gets worse when you talk about the Aerts fight. Yes, Aerts retired (in the first round) because of injury. And? Let me ask you: if Botha had retired due to injury sustained in blocking a kick from Aerts, would you consider it a victory for Aerts? Obviously, you would, and with good reason: when you sustain an injury and are unable (or unwilling) to continue, provided the injury was sustained within the rules, your opponent wins. That's it. Let's be serious about Botha. I respect the man as I respect anyone with the balls to compete; I always enjoyed watching Botha and really admire the guy's character. That said, a realistic appraisal finds him outside the top 20 heavyweights (in boxing) in his generation. And I don't think it was a particularly strong generation. When he was in his prime, he lost (by stoppage) to every world-class opponent he faced. Of course there's no shame in that. When he was shot to pieces with a history of knockout losses, overweight, and no longer bothering to train for fights--essentially just there for the cheque--not only was he competitive with first-tier kickboxers, but he earned victories (and was robbed of others--more on that below) against consensus-view all-time-greats in kickboxing. What does that tell you? In his prime he was starched by Lennox Lewis; well past-prime he beat Jérôme Le Banner. Furthermore, Botha's official record in kickboxing is very deceiving, as he was flagrantly robbed on numerous occasions--something that occurred commonly in K-1 for the benefit of the marquee fighters. Let's review, briefly. His first fight, with Abidi, should have been a NC, not a DQ-loss. Botha deserved the decision in the rematch by clearly outworking Abidi. He earned (but wasn't awarded) decision wins over Fujimoto and Khattou. And if you don't think he beat Remy Bonjasky (twice!), you're either severely biased or utterly incompetent (perhaps both). Even very anti-Botha kickboxing types begrudgingly concede that he got the better of Bonjasky. Botha then officially beat Le Banner and Aerts. He WAS then blasted out by Mighty Mo of all people (ironically, largely because Botha abandoned his boxing in favour of kicks and was caught squared-up and off-balance). Botha was robbed against Musashi and Kruth, but did lose a decision (through inactivity) to Sefo. He beat Da Silva and Kaoklai (whom you're right to point out was undersized), and deserved the win over Tony. I haven't seen the 2015 fight with Asihati. So, of the 15 fights I've seen he earned a record of 12-2 (1 NC). That's not bad. Objectively, he beat a high calibre of kickboxers when he was in far worse condition than when he was losing to elite boxers. Give the man his credit. (Of note: Botha's boxing record since his foray into kickboxing is 4-7-1--with all wins coming against tomato cans, and a fair few of the losses, too.) And re: Briggs. Isn't it funny that when kickboxers lose to boxers, you suddenly care whether the kickboxer wasn't any good, but when boxers lose to kickboxers, they appear to represent boxing itself, no matter low-class they are? Briggs only went to K-1 because he was washed-up (why else?!) and he was never world-class, anyway. Virgil Kalakoda was a South African clubfighter who lost by knockout to a guy with a record of 17-20-1, and he earned a victory over Sato and impressed in losing efforts to elite talents like Buakaw. Give him his credit, too. Like Botha, he objectively earned more impressive wins in kickboxing.

If a pro boxer wants to become as good as a pro kickboxer, they're going to have to put in an almost identical amount time as the pro kickboxers have put in. Your statement of "A sweep" , after 1-2 years, was ridiculous. Not only would they have to almost completely relearn their boxing, but they'd have learn all the other aspects from scratch. True but this is a Boxer WAY past his prime, and one who didn't bother to train a lick in K1 fighting. Francois Botha was a past prime Boxer (he was defeated by Tyson, Lewis and Klitchko during his pro career) who devoted himself a little more to K1 and beat two icons in the sport (Jerome Le Banner, Peter Aerts) . Shows you something about how how caliber Boxers are as athletes. Even the fact that an untrained Mercer survived this fight is telling. Did you see what happened to Ray Sefo when he tried to step into a Boxing ring and take on an absolute no name (Chester Hughes)? It didn't last three minutes.

I think you see exactly what my point is, and it wasn't that Botha became a great kickboxer.

It wasn't a high kick that initiated that throw, it was a low kick. How successful a high kick is, whether it be in a street fight or not, is dependent on the quality of the two fighters, the height of the two fighters, and many other factors. Depending on the specific circumstances, high kicks can easily be just as effective on the street as they are in a controlled envirnonment.

Ray was at least 8 years past his peak by this time, nothing for Musashi to really write home about.

Mercer is older and officially retired from boxing, yet he still looks like he won this fight

@MickyWard1 this isnt mma. this is k-1. he actually won one of his mma fights, ko'd tim sylvia in round 1. he lost both his k-1 fights, this fight and the other one against remy bonjasky. but he is obviously well passed his prime

You are aware that Anderson Silva intends to fight Roy Jones Jr after he retires aren't you? If he wins maybe he will attempt to challenge the Top 10 Boxers in his weight class. I think the elite MMA strikers would get picked apart in Boxing. It's not their primary discipline and they'd be fighting Pros in their own sport. But a Boxer has 100% use of his skills in MMA or Kickboxing which is why we always point out that Boxing is a limited combat sport.

If Musashi threw his legs in combinations and used side and thrust kicks to control distance like a jab....it would have been the mother of all beatdowns. Mercer just ate so many kicks if that was Serkan Yilmaz, cro cop, or vera he wouldn't have been able to walk past the second round.

There's no problem here. This isn't a boxing match and Mercer knew that going into the fight. He knew he only had 3 rounds to finish it just like Musashi did. If this WAS a boxing match of course Mercer would win. It would be odd to think otherwise.

LOL. Musashi got ground and pounded by a 7 foot Brazilian, hammerfisted in the back of the head by Sapp, and tossed around by Mercer. I don't like laughing at other people's pain, but everytime I see Musashi fighting, I can't help but to crack up. Lol.

Is there any particular reason why Musashi would want to go the distance with Mercer ?

I don't understand why Ray wasn't declared the winner by knockout when he threw that guy down in the middle of the fight for the first time, and the ref was sitting there massaging the guy's back or something. Isn't that a knockout? If Ray had jumped on top of him and started punching him in the head, he would have killed the guy. Odd rules.

As a matter of fact, it does. Granted, most of the time I want to see an awesome match between two strikers (thus a boxing match is always great to watch), but I personally also want to see adaptation - an overlap/transition between the different areas of fighting. Don't tell me that a slam like Rampage's isn't awesome to see, or a flying submission hold by Genki Sudo. With MMA, more awesome stuff is possible

No you don't, he didn't choose his opponents in K1 and was just doing it for the money. He gave up after taking one love tap from Bonjasky. Why's he fighting Kimbo in mma? Because he's getting payed and there's no way Kimbo would ever fight him in MMA, let alone have the boxing comission allow it.

Yeah, K1 barely brings in 40,000+ crowds in Japan. ...and there's nothing quite as exciting as watching two boxing heavyweights poke and paw their way to a 12 round decision.

@SeanOMatic exact, same in mixed martial arts, manny pacquiao isn't going to outstrike the guys standind that primarly use their hands too because its just not the same kind of boxing. Sameway olympic wrestlers get throw around by guys who didn't even wrestle in highschool, or guys without a belt in jiu jitsu submit guys with third degree black belts. But in their own respects, they will almost undoubtidly dominate.

I've read the interviews with Kimbo and Mercer about the fight, Kimbo is a nice guy that respect his opponent and Mercer is an asshole who's telling everyone that he will win with one punch, before I read the interviews I was hoping Kimbo to have his ass kicked, now I hope Mercer to get a gigantic ass whoop

I think Rays legs were about to go by the end, thats got to hurt, he took some pounding. He manage dto get a breather by throwing him down. They should of put him against Botha.

@tizza07 well it depends on the fighter. this was a k-1 fight. k-1 fighters ONLY specialise in stand up. not all mma fighters are stand up fighters. therefore, u cant compare the striking ability of mma fighters to k-1 fighters/muay thai fighters

Ray is an Olympic gold medallist and World champion,not just champion of a bedwuin tent! So like i said, more accomplished in his field than the examples you posted lol. Gold beats silver!
