In the scenes where the band members look "cartoony", they are CGI 3D models. They would have scanned the band members whole bodies with a camera and then they would have performed the song in mo-cap suits, because it's a lot easier to get those effects of them dissolving if you just edit a computer generated model then it is to edit camera footage.

I think one is a reference to Bob Marley's music and the piece of video where he says 'nobody knows what's inside of me' is instead a tribute to the song 'seven nation army' by The White stripes. I say I think because I've never heard the authors mention it but it seems pretty blatant to me.
