I'm a dude and Bono has a similar affect on me. I think you will enjoy All I Want Is You/Streets Have No Name (live at Slane Castle), Bad (Rattle And Hum) and Until The End Of The End/New Years Day (ZOO TV Sidney). the Slane Castle performance was just days after Bono's father had passed so it was very emotional. The other two performances are from much earlier in the band's career.

If i remember right,this was around the time he lost his dad,so he was feeling extra emotional during the entire concert. I think by having this lady by his side on the floor,he felt some kind of comfort to his situation,and it was therefor he decided to give her something extra for making him feel that way (you can tell that he tried to read her before he made that step). I think he didnt fully realize that he needed that feeling of comfort,until she layed next to him,singing the lyrics with him. So ever since i realized you were this new to U2,i have been thinking of this very performance as i knew you would have such a good reaction to it!
@greety9 ай бұрын
This gig in Boston was filmed in June, Bono’s dad passed away in August, so your theory of him needing someone to comfort is wrong I’m afraid. Bono has always pulled ppl onstage, nowadays in the Vegas’ Sphere, he comes down into the crowd. Bono’s dad was buried the day before the first Slane concert which made that film very poignant
@ogt_flavour8 ай бұрын
@@greety Bono spoke about these gigs before his dad passed away, and admitted he was emotional about it all the time, as his dad was at that time very sick, basically waiting for death. Both also had a troubled relationship so it was probably affected by all this. I think what sonofthesea said maybe is note super accurate but he is in the right direction. Cheers

He has always pulled fans up on stage right from the beginning. They've done their best to stay as connected to the fans as possible. You'll find several videos of ladies pulled up on stage, like Love is Blindness from a live show in Australia during the Zoo TV tour. Later they started pulling all kinds of people up, including allowing guitarists to play a song with them. 🥰

-Where the Streets Have No Name is absolutely a classic -Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For is absolutely a classic -With or Without You is absolutely a classic None of those facts are mutually exclusive. The only reason I say any of that is to highlight how absolutely bonkers it is those were the 3 opening tracks of the same album. For my money, those 3 opening tracks are among the 5 best of any album in Rock ‘n’ roll history.

I've heard/watched other discussions about this concert and Bono's behavior etc., but your discussion and reaction to this story is the most natural in my opinion and at least close to my heart. I am 69 years old, I live in Estonia, and of course the language barrier prevents me from fully understanding the nuances, but your body language is so natural and amazing. I can't add anything else, it's good that the world has such music, such performers/creators and such an understanding as yours...
@Stranglethroat4 ай бұрын
You're totally right about the barrier, the distance between us as fans and the band. We can feel like the song is "about us", but we know Bono isn't really singing it "to us". That's why bringing her on stage is so powerful. It's not just giving her an incredible experience, she becomes a bridge to the band. We get to experience it with her, trough her. She's our bridge.

I remember in 1984 in Dallas Bono climbed from the stage and into the lower balcony and walked through rows and rows of seats through several sections, went right by us, and we were just starstruck. Everyone was amazed, respectful, and just graced with his presence as he walked by occasionally hugging someone, shaking hands. Security wasn't even expecting it and the look on their faces when he took off was priceless.

Everyone already mentioned All I Want is You from Slane Castle and YES, you'll fall in love with his vocals. A few days after he buried his father and even Edge is emotional trying not to cry. He sang Kite (a song he wrote for him when he was taking care of him while he was at the hospital) for him too and it's such a beautiful song and performance. Anything from ZOOTV, the band at their most original, crazy and fun era. Love Is Blindness, Lemon (transition to With or Without You as Macphisto, a character he used to play at their shows), Even Better Than The Real Thing.. Their Live Aid performance is obviously very iconic. Also if you like his lyrics you should listen to 'Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses', written when Edge was dealing with his divorce. An amazing song. And a personal favorite!! Every Breaking Wave (2014 EMAs performance) because his vocals are amazing!

Everyone comments on him singing on his back and how hard it is--and they're right. Later in this show he runs a lap or two around the outer walk-way at a full sprint and then immediately launches into "Streets"🤯 A few years ago he had to have a major surgery on his chest and his Dr. told him afterward that, through some fluke of genetics, the doc estimated he possessed something like 130% of standard lung capacity. Bono was literally born for this. Bono Vox indeed! **see "Magnificent"**

Thank you for this review Rayaction. Its always refreshing to see someone who is so young appreciate a classic. I can't think of a song released in the Zoomer's generation or in the Millennial's generation that moves the soul quite like U2's With or Without You, written way back in 1987. This song speaks to the beauty of utter devotion and the tragedy of that devotion not being reciprocated better than any song in recent memory. Apart from the moving vocals of Bono, U2 must be praised for their amazing guitar and bass work, both of which serve to amplify just how timeless this song is.

Try Running to Stand Still/Where the Streets Have No Name from ZooTV Sydney. They're just an epic band and they shine brightest when live. They've become a bit overblown and everybody ages, but I tell younger kids I'm old enough to remember when U2 was cool, and in the 80's, 90's and early '00s they were the coolest band on the planet. The ZooTV tour in the early 90's lasted 3 years and was arguably their zenith.

There are certain songs in your life where you can remember exactly where you were when you first heard them. I was stationed at Plattsburgh AFB, NY in 1987. Me and a couple buddies went up to Montreal to party for the night. I had been a U2 fan since high school, but had not yet heard any song from the Joshua Tree album yet. I was in a strip club on St. Catherine street when I first heard this song. There was no song introduction but I instantly knew it was Bono. The next day I bought the album, my very first CD.
