The song is about his mother Judith Marie Keenan, who had a stroke and was reliant on a wheelchair for the rest of her life, yet still believed in Christianity. Also if you wanna hear more of Billy singing he has a side project called Ashes Divide where he sings.

The song is “clear” when you know the story of Maynard’s childhood and the love for his mother. Also, what that loss did to him emotionally and spiritually to get to the songs he sings about his mom. APC has a sound that is just amazing! ALL of their songs are beautiful!
@lowlee787 ай бұрын
Right? Like this is the most beautiful and painful love song if you know the context and backstory. The anger that comes from watching a loved one suffer. To be so angry at the god you believe in that by faith logic is the one in control of your suffering. I also love how the lyrics change slightly in the repeated refrains. Hateful spear spiteful spear .. those minor changes in refrains that repeat are challenging because you can’t go on autopilot, you have to be very in the moment and focused on what you are singing when. He does it with the musical phrasing as well, although the part I’m thinking of is from a different song. The lyrics of the repeated lines are the same, but first time it is sung with one melody, then next time a slightly different note progression or timing, and then a third time in a different variation. And pretty sure at least two if not all of them are classically trained musicians. Perfect Circle has truly incredible musical vision and interconnects songs and sounds and albums in ways that are next level. And I only listen to some of their stuff peripherally, I don’t even consider myself a proper fan.

Judith Marie the unconditional one. This song, the Wings for Marie parts 1 and 2 from 10000 days (album named after roughly the time Judith lived after the stroke, about 20 yrs) and especially Jimmy (Maynard's real name is James Herbert Keenan). The reason why Maynard is the king. He can write a song where he literally screams "F*** your god" and yet instead of just being a song filled with blind hate he slips lines like "It's not like you drove a hateful spear into his side" referencing the Spear of Destiny that was alleged to pierce the side of Jesus as he hung on the cross and is sometimes credited with his death instead of the crucifixion. That kind of reference can't be made by the ignorant, he knows exactly what he's saying.

Its not just about Judiths lasting belief in Christianity, others got it close with the church, but basically after she had the aneurysm that left her partially paralized her church basically told her she didnt need treatment if her faith in god was true she would be healed, and when she wasnt they basically told her that her sin and lack of faith was why she was not healed. Many if the nenbers shunned her and if i remember correctly she was asked to leave the church. So understandably is kind of a conversation between him and his mother not understanding why she stayed and defended a God and religion that abandoned her when she need them and his anger at the church for allowing that. Also, it's Maynard, so its gonna be complicated and genius

Great reaction! This is Maynard in his 'angry' mode. As others have pointed out, it's a very personal song to him - regarding his mother, her being paralyzed after a stroke, and spent the next 27+ years confined to a wheelchair, and her steadfast faith to Christianity, of which he VERY much questioned! That's the viewpoint he's taking here. I HIGHLY suggest checking out the Tool songs Wings For Marie (Pt. 1) & 10,000 Days (Wings Pt. 2) as a contrast to this song, and definitely pay attention to the lyrics - just a forewarning - it's a gut punch of a song series! Maynard is a little less angry. FYI - 10,000 Days is the name of the album. Significant as 10,000 days is approx. how long Judith suffered until her passing. Probably the most personal Tool song Maynard has ever written. Cheers!

I think the recorded version Maynard does all vocals but as they overlap they show both singing in the video. That being said, I think Howerdel does some backup vocals on the record. If you want to hear his singing voice, Billy Howerdel did put out a solo album in 2022 "What Normal Was" where he does all the vocals. That record is much more in a 80s Depeche Mode and the Cure vibe.

As others already mentioned the song relates to her mother, Judith Marie Keenan. Maynard over time wrote a few lyrics to songs that kind of tell the tale. On Tool's second album "Aenima" the song "Jimmy" (which is what his mother called him when he was young) is about Maynard looking back at his young self, when he was 11 and his mother suffered the aneurysm that paralysed her and how he dealt with then in comparison to his present self. Then there's this one, "Judith" by A Perfect Circle, which is basically he letting out all of his frustration regarding her fervourant christianity despite everything she's been through. Lastly there's the two song's in the album "10000 days" by Tool (which alludes to the round number of days his mother was paralyzed) which are "Wings for Marie (Pt 1)" and "10000 days (Wings Pt 2)" which is basically him dealing with her death. These two songs are meant to be listened together.
@ToxicDover9 ай бұрын
Hey Rachel, love your videos! It's always fun to see someone experience these songs fresh. This is a powerful one for sure. As a thousand or so comments have mentioned at this point, Judith is a song that really embodies the anger Maynard feels regarding his mother's health situation and the the treatment she faced from those in her church (folks saying that her health struggles were a result of her sin, telling her that God brought it on her, etc.). There are a few songs that address this - this song is the "anger" stage of grief for sure. A song by Tool, "Jimmy", gives some background of Maynard's experience when she had her stroke. Two more Tool songs, "Wings for Marie" and "10,000 Days" are essentially him coming to terms with things and paying tribute, and they are INCREDIBLY touching. I had a very similar experience (as far as emotions and anger towards god goes) with my grandfather, who essentially raised me. It's a rollercoaster of a journey - I hope you check them out!
@justingibson66249 ай бұрын
Greetings. Awesome reaction! There's already plenty of explanation as to the history regarding this song, so I won't reiterate. I will expand, however. There are a few songs by Maynard which refer to his mother. Jimmy (Tool, Ænima album) and the 2 part song Wings for Marie & 10,000 Days (Tool, 10,000 Days album) in many ways complete the story of Maynard's emotions about the situation. One specific part of your reaction today compels me to strongly suggest The Grudge by Tool. This is one of the hardest, heaviest APC songs. For a much softer side, Orestes, 3 Libras, and the acoustic version of The Hollow are amazing. The original version of The Hollow is pretty hard as is The Outsider and both are great as well. This is another band you can't really go wrong with. Ty for sharing!

the video was directed by David Fincher (Fight Club, The Social Network, etc) Maynard's movements and posture in the video are to represent a puppet on its strings, another layer of contempt for how he saw believers in God when he wrote Judith. Maynard wears a wig when he performs with APC, joking that they can only have one bald guy in the band. Several people touch on the background of Judith, but miss an important part: Not only was Maynard angry, confused, and resentful of his mother's conviction of belief in the face of her illness, perhaps more importantly, he was furious that her own church turned their backs on her, claiming she deserved the illness because her faith was weak. So being faced by what he saw as a hypocritical God punishing an innocent and that god's hypocritical church abandoning a faithful believer in her time of need, that is where this song was born. side note; Paz Leschantin on the bass is an absolute goddess lol

"Geez, that was a long note." MJK has a reputation for being able to hold extended screams and belted notes. Several Tool songs feature them. The Grudge has one thats 20+ seconds long. He would sometimes hold them almost as long when performing live. But I know that he had COVID a couple times during the pandemic. I've watched several videos of post-pandemic Tool shows, and it seems like he doesn't attempt them live anymore. I don't remember any on the Fear Inoculum album, but I'd have to listen through again to be sure. But the man's pushing 60. So it might just be a consequence of aging. He's still damned impressive.

But he wears long-haired wigs when he performs eith APC. I've seen him in a few different styles of wig when performing with Puscifer: blonde, mohawk, curly, etc. Considerably shorter than his APC wigs, though. I read in an interview that he uses the wigs as different personas, to help him maintain a distinct mental space and approach to vocals and lyrics with each band.

Billy Howerdel (guitar/ vocals) of A Perfect Circle did an album where he sang lead and played all the instruments, called Ashes Divide... titled "Keep telling myself it's alright" in 2008... and a solo Billy Howerdel album in 2022, titled 'What normal was'... This first A Perfect Circle album ('Mer de noms') was released in 2000, so it was released at the height of 'nu metal'... but it was a more ambient project... Billy Howerdel played most of the instruments, Maynard the lyrics and most of the vocals and Josh Freese (drums) most of the beats... The live band was added later and did some overdubs and backing vocals - Paz Lenchantin (bass/ violin) and Troy Van Leeuwen (guitar) ... It was a hit, selling platinum and had other singles - '3 Libras'... 'The Hollow' 🤘🔥 When they did a 2nd album 'Thirteenth Step' in 2003, Paz Lenchantin had left (She briefly joined Billy Corgan and his post-Smashing Pumpkins band Zwan) and Geordie White (aka Twiggy Ramirez of Marilyn Manson's band) joined for the album and tour.

You can't forget about the Thunder Goddess herself, Paz Lenchantin. The bass on this song is absolutely delicious.

Unfortunately Paz did not play bass on most of the record. Still great a musician though.

Been such a huge Tool fan already since 1992. Hated "Sober", though it grew on me. Let me tell you. Reality is on your side. Peace!🤣✌

Billy had his own band for a little while. Ashes Divide. Try these 2 songs, The Stone and Sword. Fun fact you will hear a chello when the song Sword starts, that is being played by Maynard's son. Sorry if someone told you this already
