My great grandmother was born on Missinaibi Lake at north end at a trading post, her name is Margaret Redbreast and she was a member of the Brunswick house First Nation. Her dad eventually became the manager of the trading post at Brunswick Lake. I spent many summers on Missinaibi lake as a kid around Jenner Bay. I only started paddling the river in 1999 and have paddled the river numerous times since. Only made it into Brunswick Lake once with my wife and our friends, Fred Neegan and Marc Johnson. Fred had the landing at Mattice named in his honour. Sure is nice to see the river again. Only saw the river that low, in 2005. Thanks. Really enjoyed it

Fantastic to have that connection. We did spend some time looking for any remains of the HBC post on my first trip over to Brunswick. Couldn't find a trace. Good to hear about your great grandmother and your own journeys on the river. A wonderful place

hi Ray and gang, it is nice to see people canoeing the Missinaibi who truly enjoy what the river has to offer. My great grand mother, Margaret Redbreast was born at the Hudson Bay post at the north end of Missinaibi Lake on the east side. I spent most of my summers on Missinaibi when I was a youngster with my familybut never canoed the river until 1999. We have canoed the full length a half dozen times as well as the bottom section from Mattice to Moose Factory many more times. Even with the low water it is a lovely trip. Thanks for sharing
@RayGoodwinCanoe3 жыл бұрын
I have done the full river to Moose Factory only once and really did enjoy it. Stunning trip. I have searched for any traces of the old post, amazing your G Grandmother was born there, but failed to find any. Not sure if we were in quite the right place. But anyway Brunswick is stunning and the run down the river is so different. Keep well and thanks for the comments.

That looked like an awesome trip. In 1998 I stayed at the campground there at the boat ramp in Barkley Bay and fished parts of the lake by both canoe and motor boat. Lots of wind and in July the temps dropped off cold enough to see your breath. Great walleye and pike fishing.

Yep I am enjoying Paul's Berens trip. Re poling: I have improvised a duck bill by tying two slightly bent green sticks to the end of a pole. Works ok ish but I am sure a properly built one would be far better.

Great video. I liked the view you had of the canoe going through the rapids. What was the boom set-up you were using? It was really low water so that must have made things interesting. What time of year did you paddle the river?
@RayGoodwinCanoe4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Paul. The boom is by railblaza. I have a fitting at either end of the canoe so I can drop the boom in real quick for either view. Not fool proof and I have the GoPro further attached to the boat with paracord. I am planning a video on the set up sometime soon. We paddled at the start of September (2019), it was low so needed to line rapids that otherwise would be paddlable. Mind it took all the pressure off in Greenhill rapid as there really was little or no consequence to a swim or broach.
@paulhudson86134 жыл бұрын
@@RayGoodwinCanoe Thanks for the information. There is a Railblaza dealer close by so I will have a look as soon as we can leave the house. We did the upper Missinaibi from Dog Lake to Mattice in July 2018 and we had lots more water. We ran Greenhill and it was quite the adventure. It didn't help that the rain came pouring down when we were part of the way through the rapids.

is there any reason you chose to take the portage into brunswick lake vs running the missinaibi?
@RayGoodwinCanoe4 жыл бұрын
The section of river downstream of the portage is largely a tree lined corridor. Bruswick Lake is absolutely stunning and the island campsite a gem. I think the added bonus is that it the historic route used by the Hudson Bay Company to their post on the north end of Brunswick. The first time I ran the river we didn't do this but then we were heading for Moosenee that time and needed to keep going. Hope that explains. Ray
@angusxena4 жыл бұрын
It looks like extremely low water. Was that a challenge?
@RayGoodwinCanoe4 жыл бұрын
It meant we had to line down some rapids because they were so rocky. However the 1.5km rapid at Greenhill was doable with the group as there the water rarely concentrated its power so there was limited consequence. So pluses and minuses. Mind after an exceptionally dry Bloodvein the year before this was a delight. Twice on the Bloodvein we ended up in channels with dry river beds........ now that was truly awful.
@RileyOutside Жыл бұрын
How many days did it take you? How did you shuttle your vehicles? :) We're doing this same trip this year and the logistics are the hardest part haha
@RayGoodwinCanoe Жыл бұрын
hi, We did the trip in 13 days which allowed us to have two rest days on the journey. Being UK based we flew into Timmins and had organised canoes, kit, food and shuttles with MHO (link in the description/info below video). Unfortunately they are based over near Algonquin nowadays so I am not sure they will that useful for just a shuttle however they may have information on stuff near Timmins. Good luck with sorting and it is a great trip.
@jamesmcintosh92524 жыл бұрын
what time of year was this run? it seems the water levels are low.
@RayGoodwinCanoe4 жыл бұрын
It was the first half of September and yep levels were low. That gave us an advantage on Greenhill as there was no real consequence of getting a line wrong, a boat stuck, or a swim. The group really loved the freedom I could give them. It did mean other rapids were less fun or needed lining because of the amount of exposed rock.
