I enjoyed this game quite a lot. The tension during some parts was spine-shivering; Henry and Delilah's relationship was amazingly well done, and at the end I felt conflicted as to whether I really wanted to meet her or not.

Instead of all the arguing in the comments, I've got a funny story for you: So, back in like 2012 there was this dude that made a cinematic Half Life 1 trailer, and his animation was superb, it was a little less realistic and more cartoonish, but that didn't matter because it was perfect. (edit: I just found the video and his channel: kzbin.info/www/bejne/raWsoWughNRrldE) so he went on to make more animations for games like TF2 and Half Life 2. people were always joking in the comments that he should be hired by valve. and in like 2015 he dropped a trailer on his channel, a trailer for Firewatch, a game, where he was a part of the developement team. (that's how I found about Firewatch btw) He got hired by CampoSanto. and now that CampoSanto has been bought by Valve, he is technically working for Valve , just like people said he will 3 years ago XD

*"you don't so much control him, you characterize him."* This perfectly expresses my general approach to gaming for over 3 decades, it's also one of the major reasons that a game usually needs to have some sort of compelling narrative to keep me interested. _Graphics_ and _Gameplay_ can take a backseat for all I care if the game has solid narrative character development. I have little interest in _controlling_ the characters, I want to explore the characters and their inner motivations as it's presented and evolves over the course of the video game experience. I'll be using this line in the future to explain my approach to games. Thank You.
@AJ-pc9gu
@AJ-pc9gu 3 жыл бұрын
hi, I know I'm late but I'm puzzled by the '3 decades part'. Games never had 'solid character development' during the early 1990s, unless ur talking about 3 or 4 games. Most of which paled in comparison to books or films. Also gameplay is essential to what gaming is after all, when you play Mario you still 'characterize' him through your expression of movement and decision making. So have you never played a game like ico or limbo, im genuinely curious.

I played mostly racing games, but after playing Life is strange, I'm super into adventure games, loved Firewatch, What Remains of Edith Finch, Oxenfree. I just love how chill these games are, love the music, art-style. No grind, crafting, just exploring the worlds.

Ike of Pyke Fantastic games the Dead Space series are. The second one in particular is universally praised for good reason. I've beaten it like 3 times. Although I don't remember much from the third other than many people saying it was disappointing and the last time I played it was a long time ago. But these games are the only horror games that I enjoy playing and enjoy getting scared.

DS and DS2 are great games. Last week I finished DS four times (hard, impossible, easy and easy+) and I am currently waiting for DS2 to be delivered. I gotta say, they aged really well. They play as good as they did back in 2008/2009. To further this conversation, Alien Isolation did immersion really well, IMO.

Awesome. Thank you for this. I had very similar feelings about Firewatch, and appreciated your take on it and other games like it. There does seem to be a balance of long-term game "projects" and shorter, more contained one-off experiences that we often cycle through. Games like Firewatch are novellas or short stories that let the brain rest between sessions of research or the thousandth hour of Kerbal Space Program... ;)

Ey a fellow Oregonian! I think living in Oregon definitely influenced my excitement for this game when it first came out, but after seeing some lets plays, it looked pretty but the mechanics and storyline was just a little bland. But what got me later was how immersive it was, because it seems like exactly what would go on if you were a real person in Henry's situation as a surveyor. It's more of an experience than a game.

@charlieni645
@charlieni645 6 жыл бұрын
Walking sims are games as long as there are meaningful interactions and gameplay mechanics. It is just another niche or subgenre in the regime of video games. We shouldn't be so rigid about it especially now as many 3A games simplify their mechanics to be less "gamey" and more cinematic like God of War or Bioshock Infinite.

Personally i love Firewatch for the simple reason that when i played it i was going through a rough time in my life where i felt emotionally isolated from people...and the game helped me work through my emotions, i really resonated with Henry and how he felt about Julia and finding someone to connect with in Delilah, i know a lot of people dislike the ending but i found it fit the feel and the point of the game (atleast for me) and again really gave me a strange closure on how i felt at the time. also the sound track is bumpin.

We got the ending was going for something more mundane and sobering, we just felt it was ham-fisted. Like you said, there were holes a plenty and it felt hollow on top of that. Like a chapter had been ripped out. There aren't even any questions left to mull over. It felt like the game equivalent of the "It was all a dream" film trope. I can't think of one of the top of my head, but I know other games/media have handled that kind of idea/conclusion better.
@bloodmachine6049
@bloodmachine6049 6 жыл бұрын
thesilverw0lf, there is actually a video on youtube which makes a compelling case for why the story itself is so non-sensical(tapped walkie talkies, someone delivering you one in a way where they would have to walk right by you to actually do so, suggesting to burn down a seismic activity station etc) There are a lot of interesting details to sort of explore, but the way it's done does leave a lot nebulous in a way, where you can't be sure whether the non-sense is intended and left that way to make you understand ssomething, or it's just bad writing and continuity.I think the ending as such was genuinelly good though, and it made a point.

Guys, you don't understand copyright. Broadcasting copyrighted content is fundamentally subject to permission that can be denied for any reason or none at all, and making use of DMCA for long-form streams/playthroughs is not fundamentally abusive, it is literally one of intended uses of copyright as specified by Berne convention. There are copyright enforcement exceptions, such as Fair Use in the States and similar provisions in some other countries, but they also don't allow quoting the copyrighted work in its entirety, but require that a minimal amount of material necessary to make a critical, satirical or such points be reproduced. So short-form reviews are more or less fundamentally protected from copyright enforcement, and using DMCA to suppress them would be illegal and would constitute abuse of the copyright enforcement tools, but that's not what's happened there. Granted, i think it was stupid of them on multiple levels, not least akin to Streisand effect. But i also understand the corporate-think and lawyer-think that leads to such decisions.

People who complain about Firewatch tend to cite their issues with the game not living up to their expectations in terms of a "satisfying ending." But I would hypothesise that's because they've been taught to expect things by other games over their lifetime and not because the game's ending itself is bad. It's ending is complex and simple at the same time, and as with the rest of the game; very grounded. I think it's that very lack of the extraordinary that leaves people feeling a little ripped off, however as basically all games these days shoot for the hyper-explosive ultimate twist epic set-piece ending, something so real as Henry & Delilah's somber realisation about their actions actually stands out more for me personally. I find Firewatch fascinating precisely because it seems to use the gamer's mind to make us build up something epic in our own minds (as it does in Henry's) over the course of the game, so when they at last reveal how somberly mundane the conclusion is it gets to be a comment on the reality of the world, demonstrated through the interactive media. So I'll always love this game, and would caution people making complaints about it - especially those accusing it of not being a game - that it might very well be the developers played you like a fiddle more than anyone else, because exposing your own preconceived notions of what games are and should be is exactly the purpose of the narrative... and as I stated at the begining, those notions have only really been fed to you over the years by other game developers. Either way, great game and great video! :)

I'm more upset by the base premise of it than anything. Marketed as a Telltale type experience it would have been fine, but they got their sales, as most "walking simulators" do, by pretending to be something they're not.

ArcticTemper Honestly it just simply isn't a good way to end a story. Other games didn't teach me to expect a certain ending to this game, the millenia of human story telling did. A story about a man running away from his problems can be told and having a disappointed character at the end Is okay. It's just that this story didn't pull it off well. At least that's how I felt about it.

Wow, a youtube comment that is well written with good arguments. Fantastic, especially cause I agree with you 100%. First time I played FW, I felt bad, and I wrote off that feeling cause "the end was not satisfying". Second time, I knew what to expect, I knew everything, and it still manged to hit me again, even harder then the first time. Then I knew, that feeling I had was not because the ending was bad. It was there because ending was good. My brain just decided to go full defense mechanism first time, but the second time, my guard was off, I knew what was coming and I let it hit me. Hit filled with realism, real life, melancholy, sadness and the simple truth. Some times we just dont get what we hope for.

Firewatch has a charm that really few games do it right, the way the game presents only 2 character in depth make me connect with them better than a Mass Effect game, it's not a game I'd play again, least not for years, but it's a game I'll always remember

remember telling myself that i should try it, like why not you know. was pretty burnt on cod and bf4 and so on. I went into it not expecting it to entertain me at all. but i still remember so fondly when i realised the game was over, and it was 4 am and i sat there just thinking about it, actually reflecting at what i just went through. trying to understand the story a bit more, having an urge to play it again incase i missed something. and i feel like this game managed to tell a captivating story about something so unextraordinary that it just took me by suprise.

I really love walking simulators and shorter games. Sure, its amazing to build your own character and take a deep dive for 30+ or 40+ hours into the world of a video game, but playing a short game and losing yourself in it for the duration of its runtime is just beautiful. One thing that i dont feel firewatch gets enough credit for is its voice acting. The choices we make in dialogue dont matter, just like in the game "The Last Stop", but unlike last stop in firewatch it isnt a bad thing. I had such a great time just getting to know Delilah. Henry and Delilah's conversations were just so natural and simple. It is some of the best voice acting i've ever seen.

I can't understand why this"game" gets so much praise. I admit that I've never seen the appeal of walking simulators, but even among favorable reviews I thought the consensus was that the ending was utter garbage. And last I checked, story was the only selling point of this whole genre.

An ending that doesnt give you what you want is not necessarily a bad ending. American audiences have gotten so used to the concept of a "happy ending" in every piece of media. Its refreshing to have an ending here that is just so realistic. Its not happy or sad. It drags you back into the real world, just like Henry is being forced to do with his wife.
@MartoLun
@MartoLun 6 жыл бұрын
The ending is not the only thing that makes a story worthwhile. Furthermore, not all endings should feel fullfilling, not all endings should explain things or close the story in a satisfying way. For many decades (centuries, even) American storytelling has played it rather safe in regards to endings. From novels and theatre, to hollywood and now videogames. It's not rare to see endings like the one in Firewatch when you read Latinamerican literature, or European movies, or Brazillian indie films, or Middle Eastern TV.

Ugh... the story in Firewatch may revolve around the mundane, but that's exactly what pissed me off, in the end. There's... no pay off, for any of it. If the game was meant to make the player feel bad for Henry and his wife, then, well, that failed as well. Had Spec Ops: The Line not existed when this game came out, I'd probably find it both more original and interesting. But as it is, I found it being an overpriced game I felt like I wasted time with, rather than a game I'll cherish and remember. Sure, the scenery was OK and the minimalistic mechanics are nice... and yet, somehow, I was never drawn into the world. Sure, the dialogue was great, but it didn't lead to anything. This theme of "never actually doing anything meaningful", for me at least, seeped into real life, with this game.

I can see where you're coming from but I couldn't disagree more. I found the game to be unfathomably boring and while the characters are interesting the "twist" is pathetic and the ending unbelievably unsatisfying. Still interesting to see pretty much an opposite point of view on the game, cheers. P. S. I should add, I played it on the ps4 where framerate far too frequently hit single digits and that's also a huge part of my annoyance with it. No Offense to the devs but if they can't code a game for a platform, they shouldn't release it on that platform. It was a shitshow.
