I love that there are so many moments like that in this series. The "genteel" Southern manners mixed with "gangster" behavior. Like when Art was in the cafe with Picker. Basically, "I can shoot you from right here no problem. But let's not interrupt people's breakfast." 😂#theOGJustifiedistheBest

I was so proud of myself. I came up with the same plan. The scene they got me the most in the series was when limehouse cut off Quarles arm. I didn’t see that coming at all.

@@ikkenhisatsu7170Agreed…I just couldn’t ‘get’ Manzell. He is more of a support ‘bad’ guy, but couldn’t ‘carry’ the show like Boyd Crowder did. Glad to see that the Boyd ‘card’ was played at the end of this past season. The Producers now have a lot of material to work with.

Many don't realize that Raylan had to be calm enough to gently pull the tablecloth so the friction of the gun on the table wasn't overcome by inertia. It's these subtle nuances that made it such an enjoyable moment and show.

Nix to me felt like the archetypal quiet psychotic gunslinger from old westerns. For that reason, it’s only a shame he didn’t show up for longer. But the way his time ends was one of the moments I count as narrative and cinematic perfection.

i think they didn't kill him because they wanted to bring him back, but then his actor got all weird about being typecast as villains(see his role in shooter) and probably didn't want to return for some reason.

this show is endlessly brilliant. fortunately there's tons of amazing clips on youtube, like this, for me to revisit. this scene is an example of some of the best stuff on tv in the past decade (ie: breaking bad): the writers create an INESCAPABLE situation and yet find a way for the protagonist to win. brilliant

Fletcher was a creature of Habit. Raylan said “I know a lot about you” suggesting he knew his MO & was immediately thinking of how to beat it…the tablecloth was an easy out, I’m sure he was thinking of alternatives like shoving or tipping the table, which would throw him off yet give a lesser advantage.

Raylan looked unsure how to deal with this situation, until Nix told Winona to count down. Then his whole demeanor changed. You could see him thinking, "This is my kind of game now, and I know his play." Raylan's near-smile at 2:29 shows he knows how to win.

I'm pretty sure he was soft smirking because Raylan enjoys games and even in this situation he was wondering how the rules of engagement would go, because you can see the change as soon as the rules are explained. You can tell by his body language that he was nervous up until the rules were explained.

And the lesson from here is never sit across a table from Raylan Givens in a duel thinking you can take him. Three men tried it and one went to hospital critically wounded. The other two ended up 💀.

Originally they had a different ending planned were Raylan flipped table but then Timothy Olyphant figured it out the tablecloth move messing around with a banana in the kitchen.

You know, for a long time I wondered about this scene. I always thought with Raylan's upbringing, and Arlo *being* Arlo, I wondered if Arlo ever taught Raylan that "game", and that's how he knew how to get out of it. It's never explicitly said, but I did wonder.

My favorite scene from the entire series. If you watch the entire episode, they set this up. Nix pulls this trick on someone else, who gets stuck. Raylan knows what he will try to do (as does the viewer), based on that scene. Desmond Harrington is an actor of the same caliber as TO. Maybe the best villain in the series.

He had potential, but the depth of the other characters, the delving into motivations. Boyd was a great villain because of his complexity, the times he tried to do right but was put back on the path of wrong. Walton Goggins was blessed with 2 near back to back great character pieces of Shane Vendrell then Boyd Crowder and we were lucky for it.

I appreciate that every wannabe tough guy who goes against Raylan has some kind of gimmick that gets them in the end. The knife guy falls in a hole, this clown, and the dude who always aims for the head only grazes Raylan. Meanwhile, the trained U.S. Marshall prevails.

I believe Boone only grazed Raylan because he was shot right before pulling his own trigger. Quarter of a second later and Raylan wouldve been a busted cantaloupe. The whole season foreshadows that Raylan met his match. Last fight was equal level. Just got lucky.

@@obiwankenobi9439 The first season foreshadowed Boone kinda because of how Raylan wears his hat in the traditional cowboy style slightly above where its supposed to be so if someone aims for the head they hit only the hat or graze you. I've seen that scene frame by frame and they both shot at exactly the same time.

Writing is a valuable thing…goes to show why the writer’s strike form years ago was settled relatively quickly, writers equaled $ & the one now where the writers are more likely to cost a studio money, yet still demand more.

You do kinda need the context that this is what he’s known for, for it to be as cool. I’m sure people still enjoyed it who didn’t know. But the whole suspense of the scene, and therefore the payoff to the suspense, is that the viewer is supposed to be aware that he will stab Raylans hand with the ice pick as Raylan goes for the gun.

It never occurred to Nix that Raylan would be aware of it too. By thinking he was being clever, all NIx did was effectively hand Raylan the gun.

I always interpreted that as Nix was zoned in and had done this so much that the muscle memory took over when Winona got to 2. He probably didn't even realize what Raylan did.

While this is an awesome scene, something popped up I just now that Ive never thought about. Is Raylen actually justified to shoot him in that moment? At surface level, Nix technically is unarmed with a firearm. And this could've ended with Raylen just getting the gun, pointing it at him and telling him to drop the ice pick and put his hands up, then arresting him. While I personally agree with Raylen firing at him, I see our court systems having a field day with this one that doesn't end up in Raylens favor.

It felt like the new series was a character assassination. The best moment was the last 5-10 mins of the series, minus the last 1-2 mins.

This is the kind of scene is that is sadly missing from the new Justified Primeval. The hammer was down on the 1911 when Fletcher placed it on the table. Any gun enthusiast would catch this and I'm sorry for being overly technical.

Bro hammers that knife into the table. Raylan shoots. 3:19 the knife is gone and table cloth looks okay.👍

Fletcher held on to the knife, you can see him with it after he's shot. The table cloth just got a single stab so that's why from that angle it appeared fine

Similar kind of thing in The Avengers british spy show of the 1960s. Except it was an ax instead of an icepick and a pea instead of a gun on the table. Steed had to move the pea before the axe fell.
