Rayman 3 capped off the original trilogy of games for our titular hero and while the game has its fair share of fans, it still sticks out as the black sheep of the trilogy, coming in at 3rd place in many fans' eyes while the first two soak up much of the spotlight.
Is this a deserved moniker for Rayman 3? Or is it actually severely underrated? Let me know what you think with a comment below, and don't forget to leave a like if you love Rayman and subscribe for more gaming content to come!

I think the rayman community is mature enough to take criticism of their preferred game in the series. rayman 3 is my favourite and I'm unphased by any of the critique of it, the 3 main rayman games are flawed but with enough qualities to warrant such a vibrant community. We just haven't seen the perfect rayman game yet because ubisoft sucks at their job.

I was surprised when I found out the comedy of this game was generally considered "cringe", since where I come from Rayman 3 is regarded as a cult classic and it is quoted by some even to this day. I guess it is also the magic of our dubbing, which made some deliveries of the jokes funnier... Also, most of us grew up with both Rayman 2 and 3 and honestly, the tone shift between these two games wasn't really that bothersome. While one game was epic and serious, the other one still had every right to be more laid back but still epic in a way. At least, that's how I see it. It can also be nostalgia, idk

Hard to say for me as I never really spoke to anyone about it. I played the German version and I think the comedy is fine. I don't really quote much from the game, but some of it certainly stuck with me. Particularly the beginning where Murphy reads from the manual and the subtitles correct him or angrily tell him he forgot to say the villain's name, which is the only reason we, the player, learn who André even is. The one thing I still quote from this game is when you try to enter the Fairy Council with Globox going "Rayman, you turned on the light, how neat!" after you press a huge button next to a door that makes it rumble but ultimately just switches on a lamp post. Then Globox gets scared of approaching Hoodlums and bursts through the door you tried to open. It's just so stupid and the delivery is perfect. Writing this, I remembered there's an entire level where Globox tries to open huge doors with his raindances while Rayman goes through large platforming sections finding the doors' switches, and Globox is left believing it was his magic. Or how at the end Rayman's hands in his sleep scare the red lums with shadow puppetry into becoming hoodlums again, suggesting both that it was Rayman's fault all along as well as seemingly creating a loop for the player to play through the game again (though the game received a isometric perspective sequel called Hoodlums' Revenge). I guess what I'm getting at is, for every fart joke, there's a pretty clever intricate joke as well.

To be fair yes, the comedy is cheesy and cringe. Simply put, they tried waaaaaaay too hard with Murphy. It can get a bit annoying honestly but it’s still fine

When I was a kid (I think that I was 7 years old, and I’m 25 years old now), I purposely snuck into my parent’s room while they were sleeping to play Rayman 3, until I got caught! I even hunched over the computer as much as possible to try and prevent the light from waking them up! I even remember that I had just cleared clearleaf forest and was about to go into the portal to the next world! That’s how good the game was to me as kid! Also, I didn’t get in trouble for sneaking past my parents, they simply had me go to bed 🙂

the soundtrack to this game had a fundamental effect on my music tastes and influence as a musician later in life... i also always really loved the aesthetics despite the lack of a deeper more serious story... the way each world had its own vibe and looked beautiful, the variety of different looking enemies were all super creative and inspiring to me as well at the time (i remember drawing my own enemies as a kid based on that world)... i think all of that made me care less about the lack of some sort of story

I would argue that Rayman 3 actually is AS EPIC as Rayman 2, but adds style and personality beyond the cliché fairytale of good vs evil. All the locations you visit are beautiful, larger than life and inspired. All the enemies and bosses have something unique and fun to them to refresh the gameplay. The story is lighthearted but still has dark undertones. Characters are more fleshed out due to actual voice acting and overacting. It feels like an epic adventure, like Pirates of the Caribbean, while Rayman 2 was The Lord of the Rings. I absolutely love Lotr, but Pirates will always be more quotable to me on daily basis, because they had this lighthearted nuance with Jack Sparrow and other main characters. Rayman 2 and Lotr are epic adventure with memorable and lovable characters, but ones that always take themselves and their journey seriously and you have to be in certain mood to vibe with that. Pirates and Rayman 3 just vibe for you.

As a kid who didn't understand English Rayman 3 was one of my favorite games I remember playing the HD demo over and over again until I finally bought the game and had a blast playing it since it was one of the first games I played that I understood what was going on even when I didn't understand English which meant to me when the characters spoke I just heard it as if it was the gibberish language they spoke in Rayman 2. think it's because of the lack of an emphasis on story that made me just like going from stage to stage and seeing the environments while listening to the music and it became one of the first games I finished as a kid without understanding English. And I think that is what made it one of my favorite games since I could finally play a game & have fun without feeling like I was missing something because of a language barrier. I think as a whole experiencing games as a kid without understanding English also was a unique experience since I had to come up with the answers myself for example I had to guess what the (what I think is) the Teensie king was saying/talking about when he jumped on Globox Stomach. I came to the conclusion that he got mad that Globox for smushing Murphy and threw Globox into the weird Funkyboard level.

It also has many fun environmental puzzles and some fun bonus levels which really are difficult. There's a reason why I play Rayman 3 in Spanish dub, not just because I grew up with that dub and know Spanish, but because the voices sounded like what you'd expect the characters to actually sound like, and the jokes landed better than they did in the English dub. I'm not sure if this is the same case for the other available dubs. I also find it surprising that Rayman 3 was considered "bad", since I loved it as a child. It's not a masterpiece, but it is worth remembering.

Fwoly huck that music choice in the second half of your video is nice. That snowboarding music is a piece of beauty and i would love to hear anything similar like it. Thank you for making this video, and though i very much like Rayman 2, i am happy that this game in the series leaves you with such a good fealing. And i hope that that may ever keep on going strong. Your verdict on this game is initially like mine on a game by name of Kya: Dark Lineage. It's somewhat Rayman-like in terms of its visuals, but it has a lot of mechanics and potential going for it. Running, Jumping, climbing, very light stealth, sliding, mechanics involving wind like freefalling or traversing wind tunnels, two variants of ridable mount that either run well or jump well, and uniquely in-depth Fighter-like combat for a 3D platformer-type game. The reason why i said your verdict was -initially- like mine is because i thought "It's good for what it is". But Kya only ever had one game and is very obscure. There's not really anything quite like it out there either with its mix of Fighter-like combat in the 3D platformer appearance and style. The closest thing to it would be the Prince of Persia trilogy on PS2, and even then those are rather different from one another. And story-wise, the set-up is interesting enough in that right off the bat we're told the main villain is the main character's dad and he has kidnapped his half-son/Kya's half-brother. And there's some more stuff outside of that. So there's no late reveal of "I am your father", just a feeling of "So he's an even bigger *bleep*head than i already knew. I'll be kickin'' his butt, getting my bro, save this world and i'm outta here." For those that don't care much about the story that's fine, because the gameplay itself is generally solid and fun. If not with some frustrating moments at times. But i personally think there's a lot of potential, mainly in terms of story, personality and characterization, that a future installment could build upon, and weird stuff that it could fix. in any case... i suppose Kya for me is what Rayman 3 is to you. A good time to fall back on and play through. It's not chill or silly on the level of Rayman 3, but it keeps my attention and has for me one of my favourite combat systems of all time. Apologies if this long comment was rather boring, but if you took the time to read through it all-- thank you for doing so, and also thank you for making this video. I wish you good luck and fun where possible on whatever projects you've got going on, be they for KZbin or outside of it. Have a good one.

6:10 I don't see how you could call Rayman 1's tone anywhere close to being similar to Rayman 2's. Rayman 1 is just as goofy with many strange and wacky scenarios, the game's story literally opening with a snarky narration from the magician and Rayman nonchalantly starting his journey, being a very cartoony game overall. It is most certainly not "serious." 3 is honestly closer to Rayman 2 than 1 is; at least it retained the same characters, unlike 2 completely changing the cast and world on a whim. Really, Rayman 2 is kinda the black sheep of the series in terms of tone now.

For me, having played various games, I actually loved how many tropes of the Rayman franchise it holds up. Rayman was often just napping at the start of the game pre-Rayman 2! A lot of the little humor bits it had felt matured (i get that it's cringe now and yet, I still laugh lol), and it just felt a little rowdier in general. I still replay this game to this day, and I honestly feel like the room-to-room basis is actually a very strong suit of the game. It directs your perspective up, down, weaving through. Usually when you back-and-forth through an area, it weaves you through it differently, and it feels like amazing progress because suddenly, the bit you saw way at the start that felt unreachable, is the spot you are now standing at. It's wonderfully applied. The Land of the Livid Dead is honestly my favourite level by far. The way you turn a corner and you're suddenly faced with this magical, huge tower. How the soundtrack sweeps into more tension and faster beats as you climb it... And then, to boot, there's a second version of the tower through a portal? And the way up is a winding, battling climb, and the way down a shoe race? They just made you go up and down an area two times, effectively visiting the same space four times, and every time it has a different flavour between platforming, battling, puzzling and just unadultered race minigame chaos. That's just peak to me.

I'm an early Rayman fan (it was one of the first platformers I played as a kid, as I was born in the early 90's) and I enjoyed Rayman 1 to 3 all the same, which includes Rayman M/Arena. Overall, Rayman 1 and 2 stuck with me more since they had a grander feel to them, and their difficulty made them feel more rewarding in the end. I played through Rayman 3 more often because it was easier to digest, but I never felt it was worse than 2 and 1 by any significant margin. I actually never felt that Rayman 2 took itself too seriously, either. Everything looks goofy, some of the robots are goofy, and the game opens with some serious slapstick that wouldn't make sense in a serious story, as the way they escape the pirate ship is by taking a completely accidental 30k feet fall from the sky without a parachute. And they don't come up with any excuses for it either, Rayman is straight up shown ramming into the ground and walking it off like it was a Tom and Jerry skit. I guess Rayman M/Arena helped it, too, as it's a multiplayer-focused game where the good and bad guys from Rayman 2 battle it out in arena combat and racing. It takes the slapstick to a higher level, and tonally it feels like a transition from Rayman 2 to Rayman 3.

Rayman 3 was one of the first, if not, THE first Rayman game I’ve played and it’s been my favorite game out of the whole series. Even though other games like origins, legends, and Rayman 2 on the 3ds were big parts of my childhood, the 3rd installment in the series really solidified my love for Rayman. I get really nostalgic for this game in particular and the problems don’t really bother me. I can recognize that they’re definitely there but I can still look past them and just have a good time. I really wish Rayman would stop showing up in side content like the Mario and rabbids dlc or a random show on Netflix (He’s not even the main focus of the show) and actually have another TRUE game. A Rayman 4 or a follow up to rayman legends would be amazing. I just miss my weird little limbless buddy

Rayman 3 is the best game I've ever played. Period. I was seven when I got it and Xbox for my birthday, been loving it ever since. Now I'm playing the HD version for like a hundredth time on Xbox One. The game mechanics, the world, the enemies, and the music. Oh man, the soundtrack is genius, it feels like every enemy has a theme song and every world has a distinct vibe, my favorites being the hoodlum sorcerer's and hoodstomper-boss's theme, the one controlling the giant legs. Of course I've played other games that critically are and could be considered "better", but Rayman 3 was the first video game I ever played. You don't forget that, no matter what the Metacritic score says about it.

I think I was the right age for the Rayman games, when I played Rayman 1 it was just way too hard, I could never beat it, I'm pretty sure when I played Rayman 2 I was still in the single digits age wise, and I loved it. But when Rayman 3 came out, just like most of the world I was in that "Edgy phase" so to me Rayman 3 seemed PERFECT. even though when I replayed it years later I realized how short it was and how easy. but I still enjoy it, more then Rayman 2 actually, probably because Rayman 2 has been ported to death, so I don't really feel nostalgic for it as it never really left. While Rayman 3 only has 1 HD remaster and thats it. I feel like Rayman 3 deserves a second take, a remake of sorts to keep what is there in Rayman 3 and expand on it, However a Rayman 2 remaster would be great too... as they have only been ported

Rayman's a good but weird series. There's honestly a lot to love about it, which gets mentioned in this video too, especially on the fronts of soundtrack, atmosphere and art direction, and solid -or at least competent- gameplay. (Rayman 1 is very hard though. The fan game Rayman Redemption is *much* more bearable) Thing is, you can jump into *any* of the games without knowing about anything of the other games and you're fine, because continuity is strange and barely existent. It's like the Darksiders series if you're known with that, but you don't have to worry about following an overarching continuity. Each time the world of Rayman is different from the last, it always offers starnge and new stuff. And for a world that lore-wise was born from the imagination and dreams of a god-like being starting to lead an own life... in a weird way, one could argue it makes sense that each game isn't very coherent with the last or next title. For each game could be seen as a new dream. A strange and awesome piece of imagination that runs through each of the mainline titles. So if one day you could find Rayman 2, 3, Legends or Origins on the cheap (you can *definitely* find Rayman Redemption on the cheap-- it's completely free) , there's no harm in trying to see what each of the games may hold. And if you go for it but don't jive with it like you may do with Spyro, i hope it will be at the very least an interesting time.

While Rayman 3 definitely doesn't take itself that serious I think there's something to be said for Rayman 2 taking itself a bit too serious at some points.

Having played it after 1 and 2 (the latter being my favorite game at the time), I don't really remember much controversy around 3, especially when you compare it to the move to turn the fourth installment into a party game. The serie didn't have a clear identity by that point as the two previous games had almost nothing in common, so they had the room to let themselves go into another completely different direction. I would say the humor was hit or miss. I think they were going for a "sanitized Conker" vibe to make Rayman look edgier without actually putting anything controversial in the game. It could have worked better, but the execution made it regularly more annoying than funny. Retrospectively, this was an early sign of what was to come with the Rabbids. Other than that, when I played it for the first time, I didn't like the scoring system, found the strafing awkward and hated the way they turned Globox into an idiot, but the various gameplay sequences and the artistic direction were strong enough to carry the game for me. It brought quite a bit to the table, the skateboarding psychedelic trip is still one of the most iconic sequence of the franchise.

I always thought rayman 2 was super overrated it has some serious problems people overlook. Rayman 3 fixed everything and rayman 3 was the best game of 2003. Tho 2003 was a pretty mediocre year for games. but this was a gem

I feel the same way about Rayman 3. There's really nothing redeeming about that game. The combat is probably the best part, and even that feels kinda... odd and unfinished... And that's despite being completely honest with the fact that Rayman 2s combat barely even exists! I mean... the *main* enemy, the robo-pirate, doesn't even *move!* Even weirder is that they *do* move in specific parts of the game, which actually makes the combat great, so it's not like they couldn't do it. (but that could possibly only be in the remaster, not sure)

Rayman 3 is actually a really good game. The jokes are bad and not too serious of a story. That's not where the strength lies, it's in the journey and gameplay and Rayman nails it. Pretty much no bugs or awkward flaws, everything works as it should and it does a lot of fun stuff like Globox's drunk bubbles to platform further. It has small details and quirky stuff you never see in other platformers. The platforming isn't clunky or feels bad, it's easy and fun to traverse and move around the environment. The combat is simplified but satisfying with clear wonky indicators and a satisfying punch sound when you land a heavy hit and it feels as impactful as it is on the enemies. But what sells it to me is the visuals. Most platformers have a style and some shadows but mostly laid back blank visuals. Here just LOOK at 1:48 the sun rays piercing through the dark sky covering branches hugging you, the bright outline of the river water and the river itself shining bright on the environment from below, bent bridges and plants and vines scattered around. It's dark in a cozy way and the lights highlights the terrain and makes it pop out. And then 2:48 you arrive to a curved uneven terrain. Multiple massive trees places in specific spots to showoff the size and distance with the brightest spots in the back, letting the outside peek in. It's artistically placed and drawn. The enemy base having reds and brown wood with metal to stand out like a fungi on a tree along with the flora also being colorful to stand out from the soothing blue color of the background level. It's aesthetically pleasing. Had it been any other game then everything would've been bright, no light rays, flat even platform terrain, no tall branches and leaves covering the top just a clear sky and a much duller color tone by making everything bright. And not look hand painted. The mini games and sections are also well made, I love the snowboard stage as it isn't demanding, aggravating and you aren't punished for anything and can just do it over by letting Globox win. It let's you enjoy it. The obstacles vary and shake up the formula. The Knaren area, the factory's dangerous pits and liquids keeping you on your toes, the land of the dead giving you a large area to spread your legs and take a jog, or the swamp putting enemies in boats and traversing through caves and stumps.

I feel like Rayman 3 was made for kids like me back in the day. It was a super blast for young kids when it came it, perfectly suited for us! It's annoying for older teens who had played 1 and 2, and expected more, but it was never really made for them, it was made as a fun experience for kids. Best game on my PS2 by far (and I had GTA SA)

As someone who prefers 2 to 3, I still really like 3. 2 felt a bit more focused, but 3 cuts some of the fat from its predecessor and gets pretty creative with the combat fatigues. 3 also perfected the combat for 3D Platformers, but the camera gets in the way of those fights too much for me. I don’t feel as satisfied as I want to. That being said, Origins is my favorite, and Legends is pretty great as well. If I were to rank them all, I’d say O>2>L>3>1 They’re all special in their own way.

Weird to see someone praise the movement in Rayman 3 so generously. I frankly find that kind of movement, the clunky and slow kind, to be abysmal. Rayman 2s movement, on the other hand, is quite literally perfection. Everything is so quick and snappy! It just screams to be utilized further, with more advanced platforming and mechanics to master! Feel similarly about Pac-Man World 2. Almost perfect controls.
