Episode Notes:
1. Playstation and Saturn version captured on real hardware. I used BigPEmu for the first time for the Jaguar footage. It worked fantastically.
2. The PC version got additional levels.
3. Thank god for the Jaguar's attract mode. I have gameplay footage of my own into the 5th world, but the Jaguar attract mode played the game so much better than I did, I featured it a number of times in this video.
4. I own this for both the Saturn and Playstation.
5. I enjoyed the sequels as well. Rayman 2 is a favorite of mine on the DC.
6. The Playstation version has a password feature.
7. The PS footage was captured with a Elgato HD60 vs the Saturn on a Elgato HD60X. While both had the exact same settings(720p60fps) I found the Saturn footage appeared somewhat rougher. The HD60X is a new component in my setup but I'm seriously thinking about ditching it.

I still remember to this very day that week when my mom and dad brought me the Jaguar version of Rayman and a McDonalds meal during my high school days. I almost finished it that very night but i was already getting tired. Love this game to death despite its difficulty. And yeah, my dad was a game collector and that's how i played the Jaguar version. Thank you and rest in peace dad. Me, my brother, and mom miss having you around with us :(

a game that proves that the era of 32-bit consoles shouldn't be seen as showcases for 3D games. 2D games still had a lot of potential on next-gen 32-bit machines, but the public absolutely wanted 3D, and often at the expense of quality. that's a shame.

It's ironic especially in hindsight considering how few 3D games are still worth playing from that era. The 2D stuff is all mostly still amazing.

The tech really wasn’t there yet, and wouldn’t be until the Dreamcast, at least for consoles. Even back then, I couldn’t see the appeal of the ugly 3D graphics of the time and always looked forward to the few 2D releases like Symphony of the Night. That said, the focus on 3D during that time served as practice for the next generation and allowed them to figure stuff out like controls and camera.

@@JohnDoe-wq5eu A lot of 3D games from that era are still fun to come back to and play. At least I think so. Mario 64, Crash Bandicoot, Final Fantasy 7, Ocarina of Time, Diddy Kong Racing, Hydro Thunder, Half Life, Quake, and of course Rayman 2. And those are just a handful of games. I could list more if I really wanted to

However, it’s easy to forget most 2D games on 5th gen consoles stayed in Japan. Bomberman on the Sega Saturn or Valkyrie Profile on the PlayStation looks like a Super NES game and no one is batting an eyelid over that.

@@JohnDoe-wq5eu Do you hope that one of Sony’s execs regretted that decision and wish they had embraced 2D software more? And not to mention, some of those 3D fighters on PS1 and Saturn like Zero Divide, Virtua Fighter 2 or Soul Blade haven’t aged too badly in my opinion. I feel those games can coexist with their newest iterations.

Lets also not forget that you have to find and break every single electoon cage to unlock the final world. This is easier said than done as some are extremely well hidden, or will only appear under very specific circumstances.

There was an MS-DOS version of this game as well. Which had good sound if you had an AWE32 or other higher end card. Controller support exists but in 1995 the Gravis pad was pretty much it. The music was CD based but the effects weren't. It was based on PS1 version of course.

Good review! I actually had the MS-DOS version of this game growing up and I think I was only able to get to Band Land before my game was cut short due to the difficulty. It was crazy difficult! I've played hundreds of 2D platformers, but this is like the only one I have never finished. Fun fact is that this game was never properly playtested which was the main cause of the brutal difficulty.

Now THIS is the Ubisoft I remember!!! When my best friend got this for his PS1, we were in love with the game! It was fun, beautiful and quite tough but we got far (without the level select code). Just a fantastic game with a sharp difficulty curve. It will handily serve you some humble pie a la mode! 🥧🍦 The Saturn version is just as good with the added stage transition effects. Just the music alone brings back so much nostalgia.

Rayman is stunning to look at, fun to play at the start, and has some beautiful music (on the CD-based versions) but you're right about the difficulty spike later on, this game is brutally hard. The GBA had a good port of this game too but the music will make you want to rip your ears off.

Rayman is a huge part of my memories from Christmas '95 as I was fortunate enough to have a PlayStation already and received it and some other games for Christmas. It's definitely difficult but, as you said, the continues cheat makes it manageable. And it always kept me coming back for more. The sound and visual design was pure bliss and it's a game I revisit frequently. I'm partial to the PlayStation version, but I think it objectively has the best sound design. Obviously the Jag can't compete and the sound effects are clearer and richer on PSX as compared to Saturn imo.

The Jaguar had a very small library compared to it's cd based competitors, so this was a must-have if you had the console. It would of been cool to see it show up on the 3DO, and 32X, because they needed a game like this to shine in their respected libraries.

Great honest review. I too remember seeing this in magazines beginning around 1994. I ended up getting and playing it on PC around '95-96 but I was only like 11 and never got far. I LOOOOVED it though. I've revisited it on PSX maybe 5 years ago and I still love it. I always loved the graphics, animation, music and overall design. I actually appreciate the difficulty and the game feels strangely comforting as something you take your time with and get to know intimately.

Have all 3 versions. And believe it or not, the Jaguar is my version of choice. Even though it didn't have the benefits of CD audio, the music on the Jaguar version had more of a cartoon feel, which I believe is what the developers were originally trying to go for. Plus, being on a cartridge, it had the benefit of no loading times. The only disadvantage to the Jaguar version is the horrible controller. But that's honestly a minor complaint since most Jaguar owners are actually used to it, and it doesn't use the numeric pads at all. But the PSX and Saturn controllers are naturally better.

Back in the day, I rented Rayman for PS1 from Blockbuster on a whim, largely because I liked the art. It became one of my lowkey favorite action platformer franchises after that, especially with that amazing soundtrack (and the fact that you could listen to it in its entirety from the PS1 disc in a CD player). It's never a series I actively look out for in terms of new releases, but when I see it, I have to play it. Betilla's Theme and the Dolphins song were my favorites, and very easily bring me back to the 90s.

I can surmise it was based on needing some cylinder item that some developer created a way to draw on screen while scrolling and showing the proper angle on 16 bit hardware. Guys that later used the same process just would like to be seen not using the same idea, though they totally are, would change the design to weird items rather then a lamp post or futuristic building.

You touched on pretty much all the feelings I had, my admiration for it's graphical and aural beauty and how well they got the controls working on their very first try, to my frustration with the level design and the overall difficulty, with all the cheap deaths they give you and looong painful levels The only thing I feel I can personally say is that I wished the camera was pulled back further. Feels like everything being so zoomed in on Rayman to show up what a gorgeous sprite they made makes it so much harder to navigate the worlds, especially in the slider-stages in Band Land (I played the PS1 version) and the various auto-scrolling levels. If there was greater visibility I feel like I wouldn't be so stressed or die so many cheap deaths. Thank God for that life-farming level with the mosquito... even if you have to trek aaaall the way back to the first world on the map to access it. And I guess I can also back the people in the comment saying that part of the bastardly difficulty of Rayman was them not actually testing the game with anyone BUT the hardcore testers who had been on the team from the start and thus knew how to handle it and tune everything to THEIR standards, and the requirement that you gather ALL the Eletoons in the stages. I am SO grateful that I knew how to access the internet and Gamefaqs as a kid because URGH expecting me to navigate these death traps, keeping an eye on every alternate path in levels that are so big the zoomed-in camera makes them VERY easy to miss, losing your gathered hit points with every death.... shameful as it is to say, it was while I was going back to gather more eletoons to get into the final level where I just took a break to gather my mind-energy, and just... never went back. I want to, one of these days, now that I'm more prepared for it. Oh, one thing I do wish they could've added- make it so Rayman can crouch AND punch! SO frustrating that you have to throw a punch, THEN crouch and hope that the little wandering enemies that are so short you can't hit them while standing, are JUST close enough that when the fist returns back it will have lowered itself just enough that it will hit them. LIke... why could we just not have had the ability to send our fist at groundlevel? I do not understand these design chocies. But still- VERY pretty game, and functional. Frustrating, but functional, never felt the controllers were against me... after I figured out Rayman's momentum and how his jumps actually operate.

It's interesting seeing games on consoles I never owned back in the day like this one. I never had a Saturn or a Playstation 1 in the 90's so naturally I never got to play this game, my family went from SEGA Master System to SEGA Mega Drive to Nintendo 64 and then Dreamcast, GameCube, Xbox, PS2, Xbox360 and then nothing. Father in-law gave me and my wife a PS1 but i've never used it having being able to play PS1 games on the PS2. Looks like a nice platformer to sink your teeth into. Thank you for the video SLX.

Graphically I don't think Rayman has ever been topped. It is 2D sprite perfection

Donkey Kong Country on Super NES beat it by one year and it's not even a 32-Bit game. Yoshi's Island on Super NES is also 2D sprite perfection and it's only 16-Bit.

@@VOAN Yoshi's Island is absolutely gorgeous and still holds up very well. DKC was amazing when it was released, but it's graphical style hasn't aged as well as normal pixelated games. I got DKC day one and loved it from the very first intro scene, and I love Killer Instinct too, but pre-rendered sprites aren't the show stoppers they used to be

I have it for the Jaguar and it's a shame other developers didn't try as hard on the system. It really shows what it's capable of if anyone put in the effort.
@VOAN

Still it sold the worst on Jaguar, one reason why not many devs wanted to show the effort on a platform that failed to market and promote their games.

Hoping if things do go badly with Ubisoft in the future, Rayman does find a good home again. Bg&E I don't have much faith, but I hold out for the limbless one

The fact it's been almost ten years since legends is such a shame. Rayman deserves better, but you're right if Ubi goes under or gets bought out I really do hope he finds greener pastures.

I'm still trying to collect every sidescrolling platformer for the PS1, it's crazy how beautiful Rayman 1 still is. But pretty much all the 2D PS1 games look amazing. Games like The Adventures of Lomax, Silhouette Mirage, Ganbare Goemon Oedodaikaiten, Goemon Uchuu Kaizoku Akogingu and Goemon Shin Seddai Shumei, Mega Man X3-X6, Panzer Bandit, Gunner's Heaven, they all have such timeless art style. So much so that most modern indie 2D platformers copy the 32-bit 2D effects and call it a "retro 8 or 16-bit inspired", when it uses stuff like particle effects and transparencies not possible on 16-bit machines.

This game was my childhood & the reason why I got into so many consoles because of all the ports & sequels. Try playing this game on MS-DOS with keyboard with the game's increasing difficulty while being a highly ADD impatient 6 year old. Worse still, the jump button was Ctrl & the punch button was Alt. I had so many cheap deaths due to that stupid Start button in the middle. I think you could remap the buttons but I didn't know that at the time nor had a controller. I eventually got so good at the game I speedran the game with a record 4:57 before I knew SRing was a thing. I was even able to complete the PS1, Saturn, and PC in a single day. I completed the game at 12 years old. Didn't have internet either then. One thing SLX didnt mention to unlock the final boss is you have to find & unlock the electoon cages from all previous levels. Some are the cages are soooo hard to find in the PC version making the game harder. The placements of them are better somewhat in the Saturn and PSX versions. Still hard though. The PC version also has the music loop differently and lacks the ambience on consoles. Kind of like having all the music of that certain world go through itself once before looping. There is a modern remake called Rayman Redemption & is a Really good fan edition of the game. Before Rayman 2: The Great Escape came out, we got Rayman Gold. This version had levels even harder than Rayman 1. We even got Rayman Designer where you got to make your own levels. This is where Rayman By His Fans came from. We even got educational games from this same game engine. I loved this series before I got into Kirby then Splatoon. I think I said my take for the day though.

I had the Jaguar version. It was the only game on the console to impress my friends but they ended up getting 3DO instead. So we all bet on some failed consoles in the mid 90s lol.

Don't forget the most damming part of the game, you have to find every caged Lum to be able to fight the final boss/level. Meaning if you missed a cage on an earlier level, you'll have to go back and play it again.
