Raymarine Dragonfly Pro reveiw

Had a Pro4 on my old kayak but sold it with the kayak. Bought a new kayak & put a new Lowrance Hook 2 5 Tripleshot ☹️👎🏻, used it a few months and got rid of it. Getting a new Dragonfly Pro4 next week, it’s so much better all round 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻. Yes it’s slow loading up but the Hook2 I had was probably only about 10 seconds quicker. I suggest turning the unit on as you are going into the water so by the time you’re ready it’s running. Hopefully you aren’t teaching your kids the art of impatience and intolerance which seems to be becoming a worldwide disease 😜. I’m extremely fussy with my electronics and have chosen to go back to Raymarine as “Personally” for what I do in bays & offshore, the Pro4 is way better. The Hook2 also has cheap plugs 100% guaranteed to fail if removing from a kayak or any other vessel regularly (to avoid theft). Side scan on a 5” is wasted, so go 7,9 or bigger if you’re wanting side scan. Unfortunately there are so few reviews of Dragonfly’s compared to cheaper Lowrances. Even my old Humminbird 385CI DI was better than the Lowrance. In all fairness I have been lead to believe the Better Lowrances are not the Hook2 series but cost more with better electronics. If you are not reading bottom at higher speeds this is usually caused by cavitation so it could be the way you have the transducer mounted or something causing bubbles around the transducer.

Exactly.. the transducer is not placed correctly... I have a Dragonfly 5 and it shows depth in speeds +20 knots.. so don't blame the equipment... blame it on the instalation of it.

Thanks Darren, its my Hull. it is like a whaler whaler, and hit has 2 tunnels ( 3 deadrises )so the transducer sits on one of the outer hulls. I can get it lower becuase of the rotation of the motor. So it is ... what it is. thanks though. Overall I'm pretty happy with this unit. 3 years later its strong.

It takes a while to load up because it tracks so many GPS satellites...but I'm with you, I wish it'd start showing sonar readings much sooner and pick up the GPS stuff in the background

I have pushed the transducer 1.5 inches further into the water. the speed reading works more consistently now.

Yes for this little boat. it works pretty good, and it's easy to move through functions. I would prefer the depth reading would work when I'm up on step over 10 - 15kts.

Have you tried different locations for your transducer? Maybe fix it to a pole and experiment a little. Looked very wrong on both settings.

At least it works, received one as a gift a couple of yrs ago, tried it for the first time, will not even power up, there Tech was useless, said us the website to fill out a warranty sticker. Sad excuse for a website! Sure has changed my opinion of Raymarine!

if memory serves... it was about $400 -$500 Canadian Dollars. I just did a quick search and neither the store purchased it from or GPS Central offer the dragonfly anymore.

Go to the 6:25 of the video. it shows how to access the navigation or gps maps from sonar. Press the back arrow then use the scroll arrows on either side of the OK to scroll left and right. then press ok when you are on the screen display you want. However, you may not have a gps on your unit, it could be a sonar only. see www.raymarine.com/dragonfly/ for all their current models. you will see some are downchirp/sonar only and some have both. they have the same body.

My dragonfly picks up the bottom doing 30mph in three hundred plus feet ,you dont have your transducer mounted rite your not a good source for a reveiw.

I agree this is not working properly. For clarity... this is a transom mount transducer... not a through hull or inside hull transducer. I have a Humminbird that is over 10 years old that performs great on plane. This was not intended to be an instructional video... I have moved the transducer to several locations, and double checked the installation instructions. This video does reflect how the transducer performed on this boat.

The reason why he keeps saying "then you'll see" again and again is because this device just keep loading and loading and loading and it never ends loading. That's so slow, I would smack this in the lake just trying to zoom in out.

@@depaultm You are Welcome! I don't believe I have advocated for this product. It is a genuine review. I have seen $3000 units perform but not many other $300 units. I hope this helps others too.
